UC Santa Barbara Men, Women Sweep UNLV

The UNLV Rebels traveled to UC Santa Barbara for a dual meet on Saturday. Both UCSB squads held off the competition to win the meet. The women topped UNLV 168-93, while the men beat the Rebels 153-109. Full results can be found here.

 

UCSB:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On a rainy Saturday, the UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swimming teams came out and beat the men and women of UNLV in the first duel meet of 2016. Throughout the meet the Gauchos dominated, winning 24 of the 32 events. The women beat the Rebels 168-93 and the men won 153-109.

Lauren Vosseler, Madison Tedesco, Julia Mikota, and Billy Mullis each had a pair of wins in their individual events today.

The Gaucho women kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Cheyenne Low led in the backstroke, followed by Charis Hoppe, Rachel Kulik, and Lauren Vosseler to finish at a time of 1:43.83.

After the relays, Reid Whaley (17:37.84) took home a win in the longest event, the 1650 freestyle. Dasha Depew (17:53.51) trailed in third.

The men dominated the 1650 freestyle, taking one-two-three in the event. Andy Lau (16:14.90) led the pack, followed by Logan Hotchkiss (16:15.91) in second, and Matt Drum (16:36.15) in third.

Billy Mullis (1:40.12) continued the momentum for the men, sealing a first place finish in the 200 freestyle.

The Gauchos found victories in the 100 backstroke, with Julia Mikota (56.50) winning the women’s heat and Albert Miao (51.19) winning the men’s heat.

Madison Tedesco (2:06.99) and Chris Nolan (1:49.33) each found the wall first in the 200 butterfly. Tedesco also took home first in the women’s 100 butterfly with a time of 58.35.

Lauren Vosseler led both sprint events, winning the 50 freestyle in 23.40 and the 100 freestyle in 51.10.

In a tight race for first, Eddie Sanchez (45.78) edged out UNLV’s Kasey Foley (45.98) for a win in the men’s 100 freestyle.

Julia Mikota (2:03.17) and Billy Mullis (1:50.45) each picked up wins in the 200 backstroke.

Alyssa Shew (2:20.08) took first in the women’s 200 breaststroke, Katie Records (5:05.76) in the women’s 500 freestyle, Eric Vanbrocklin (4:41.92) in the men’s 500 freestyle, and Gabe Bolender (4:04.57) in the men’s 400 IM.

The Gaucho women finished the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, winning it in 1:34.30.

Catch the Gauchos back in the pool on January 22 for their meet against the University of the Pacific Tigers.

UNLV:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed their training trip in California on Saturday with a duel meet at UC Santa Barbara. Both Rebel teams would drop their contests, with the men falling by a 153-109 score while the UNLV women lost by a 168-93 margin.

“While it was disappointing ending up on the wrong end of the team score we some some great racing today,” said UNLV interim head coach Bobby Folan. “I was especially impressed with some of our swims after an intense week of training. Now we head into the business end of the season and the countdown to our conference championships begin.”

The women began their meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. That was followed by the 1650 free where Kelsey Wuoti placed second in a time of 17:48.15. The first win for UNLV was in the third event of the meet, the 200 free, where Michelle Troup posted a first place time of 1:51.86.

After Jessica Wong posted a second place time of 58.40 in the 100 back, Lina Rathsack followed with another win for UNLV, this time in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.22. The next two events saw UNLV claim second in both, with Goezde Tekin posting a time of 2:08.05 in the 200 fly and Troup a 23.94 in the 50 free.

Troup followed that by swimming a time of 51.36 to place second i nthe 100 free, while Rathsack was second in the 200 breast in 2:21.22. UNLV would win one more event, with Kristian Hendrick posting the top time in the 400 IM in 4:29.69. The Rebels’ 200 free relay squad would place second.

On the men’s side, UNLV swept both relay events, beginning with the 200 medley where Caio Dini, Boris Kulizhnikov, Dylan Tarazona and Dillon Virva turned in a time of 1:33.50.

Samuel Lameynardie led off the individual swims for UNLV by placing second in the 200 free in 1:41.96. The next top-two finish was in the 100 breast, as Francios Van Wynsberghe turned in a time of 58.35. Virva won an event as well for the Rebels, the 50 free in 20.57.

The next sprint free event, the 100 free, saw Kasey Foleyfinish second in 45.98, while Dannon Daigler was second in the 200 back in 1:51.94. UNLV went 1-2 in the 200 breast, as Kulizhnikov finished in 2:06.00 and Van Wynesberghe was second in 2:06.89.

The Rebels would win two of the final three events, with Tarazona claiming the 100 fly in 49.04 while the 200 free relay was first in 1:23.37. Making up that relay squad was Virva, Foley, Tarazona and Forrest Beesley.

UNLV’s next action will be its first home meet of the 2015-16 season, a Saturday, Jan. 23 contest against Air Force and the Harvard men’s squad at 12 pm in the Buchanan Natatorium. .
