SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota swimming and diving team member Stella Fairbanks won both diving events as part of four event wins for the team on day two of the Coyote Invitational on Saturday inside the Midco Aquatic Center.

Fairbanks, a junior, secured first-place finishes in both diving competitions for the third straight meet, taking the one-meter and three-meter events.

Fairbanks upped her season win total to nine by scoring 227.55 points on the one-meter board and 251.70 on the three-meter board.

South Dakota received an individual first-place effort from freshman Camilla Brogger-Andersen in the 1650 free (17:50.76) while the men’s foursome of Zachary KoppJack BerdahlMack Sathre and Alec Thomas won the 200 medley relay in 1:32.07.

Aidan Gantenbein posted a runner-up finish in the 100 back (52.02) while Matthew Sorbe was second in the 1650 free (16:36.52).

Chelsea Webber earned a runner-up finish in the 200 back (2:10.46) while South Dakota also received second-place efforts from Samantha Mersnick on the one-meter diving board (222.05) and Kayla Middaugh on the three-meter diving board (242.15).

The Coyote women’s quartet of Skyler LeverenzKara OwensSara Mayer and Emily Kahn were second in the 400 free relay (3:35.10) while the men’s foursome of Thomas, Sathre, Parker Sonnabend and Brennon Conner were third in 3:06.95.

Third-place performances came from Sophia Vitela in the 1650 free (18:40.58), Leverenz in the 100 IM (1:00.08), Mayer in the 200 fly (2:11.56), Mady Schmidt on the three-meter diving board (230.40) along with Thomas in the 200 back (1:55.22).

This was the final regular season meet for the Coyotes who will have a couple of weeks to prepare for the Summit League Championships, which take place Feb. 22-25 in Minneapolis, Minn.

SIOUX FALLS — Spencer Fritze swept the diving events, Denilson Cyprianos won the two longest races of the day and Austin Smith swam his way to a victory in record-setting fashion to highlight the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team’s performance Saturday at the Coyote Invitational.

A senior from Park Rapids, Minnesota, Fritze claimed the 1-meter competition with a score of 262 points over six dives, then upped his winning total on the 3-meter board to 271.25 points. Teammate Zach Boyd was runner-up in both events with respective scores of 235.75 and 252.75.

Cyprianos, a sophomore from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, began the day by winning the 400-yard individual medley during the morning session in 4 minutes, 7.45 seconds, then came back in the afternoon to win the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:09.40 that ranks sixth in program history.

Jackrabbit swimmers claimed three of the top five spots in both the 400 IM and mile; Braxton McGrath (4:11.92) and Alex Kraft (4:15.45) were third and fifth in the 400 IM, while Max White (16:50.99) and Matt Sorenson (17:39.54) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle.

Smith, a sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas, by way of Omaha, lowered his own school record in the 100 individual medley en route to an event title. His mark of 50.53 seconds shaved .36 seconds off his previous standard set last March at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship.

Smith’s victory led an SDSU sweep of the top three spots in the 100 IM as Aiden Carstensen placed second in 51.70 seconds and Charles Sieglaff took third in 52.05 seconds. Smith also turned in a third-place effort in the 100 breaststroke, 56.53 seconds, with Gavin Wheeler taking fourth in 57.70 seconds.

In all, the Jackrabbit men combined to win eight event titles on Saturday, including individual victories from Eric Anderson in the 200 freestyle and Luke Nichols in the 200 butterfly. Anderson touched the wall in 1:41.41 for his 200 free victory and was followed by teammates Damon Venner in second place (1:43.39) and Jack Ellison with a fourth-place showing (1:44.76).

Nichols posted a winning time of 1:56.92 in the 200 butterfly, with Anderson taking third in 2:00.04. Nichols and Anderson also formed half of the Jackrabbits’ winning 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Smith and Collin Schock for a time of 3:05.90.

Adding runner-up performances for the Jackrabbits were Rafael Negri in the 200 backstroke, 1:54.16, and Jon Galles in the 100 freestyle, 46.80 seconds.

The Jackrabbits will be in training until the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships slated for Feb. 22-25 in Minneapolis.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Mavericks wrapped up their regular season action at the Coyote Invite this weekend. The women and men combined for over 65 top-10 finishes over the two day event.

The Maverick women saw four first place finishes over the weekend, while the men claimed three.

“I was really happy to see some fast swims at our last meet before conference,” said head coach Jessica Hessel. “We are at the end of some really intense training, and we’re still able to push through the fatigue and show up strong. I’m excited to see this team suit up in a few weeks and show off all their hard work this season.”

A team of Grant SchaefferOwen HoakLogan Kempf and Grant Waszak claimed the first top-bill with a time of 1:23.18 in the 200-free relay.

Carina Monroe the grabbed the 500-free title with a time of 5:11.85.

The Maverick women earned first in the 400-medley relay. Liv Theil, Jillian AltmaierSadie Khalil, and Halle Kuck swam a time of 3:36. 16 for the prize.

Hailey Matthews the grabbed another individual top-placement for Omaha. She swam a time of 4:25.87 in the 400-IM.

The Maverick men got their first individual first-place finish by Amir Haviv in the 100-breast. He led the group with a time of 55.81.

Hoak would get one more top-placement for the Omaha men with a time of 46.63 in the 100-free, while a team of Morgan BakerOlivia Dendinger, Hagemann, and Matthews earned first in the 400-free. They swam a time of 3:32.78.

Between the men and women, Omaha had seven second-place finishes, and seven more third-place times over the weekend.

Omaha returns to action in a few weeks at the Summit League Championships. They’ll head to Minneapolis from Feb. 22-25.
