BURNABY, B.C. — Seattle University men’s swimming was victorious on Saturday in Canada as it dropped rival Simon Fraser 135.5-126.5 in head-to-head action.

The Redhawks won five individual events outright in addition to the 400-meter Freestyle Relay.

Juan Varela and Greg Raper each tallied a pair of first-place finishes to headline the Seattle U day. Varela earned top finishes in the 400 and 800 Freestyle events, posting times of 4:10.36 and, 8:41.14, respectively. Raper meanwhile led the way in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, clocking respective times of 24.04 and 52.93.

Jack Neton was also awarded full points in the 200 Breaststroke as his time of 2:22.34 was more than five seconds better than the field. Neton however took second in the 100 Breaststroke, 1:06.65, finishing three-hundredths of a second off the first-place pace.

Led by Raper, Isaac Parker and Tyler Goodspeed helped Seattle U sweep the 50 Freestyle. Parker took second in the event with a time of 24.26, while Goodspeed rounded out the order with a time of 24.42. Parker earned another second-place in the 100 Freestyle as he recorded a time of 53.19.

In the 100 Backstroke, second-place points were split for Will Corona as he checked in at 59.30. Corona was also second in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:36.31.

George Thiss took third in the 100 Breaststroke and 100 IM, notching times of 1:09.39 and 4:47.59.

Ryan Ascencio was the top Redhawk finisher in the 200 Butterfly, earning third with a time of 2:12.76.

Connor Barringer took third in the 200 Freestyle touching in at 1:58.54.

Chang He earned third-place points with a time of 2:31.06 in the 200 Breaststroke.

Emmett Moore and Zach Zenteno were also third in their respective events. Moore had a time of 58.46 in the 100 Butterfly, while posted a 2:11.71 in the 200 Backstroke.

Justin Kalugin notched a third-place finish in the 400 and 800 Freestyle, registering respective times of 4:16.28 and 8:42.49.

In the 400 Medley, the team of Weiss, Neton, Corona, Raper took second, 3:54.76, while the group of Moore, He, Saric, Parker checked in at 4:05.60 for a third-place finish. Meanwhile the Redhawks took first and third finishes in the 400 Freestyle with the quartet of Raper, Parker, Goodspeed, Zenteno leading the way with a time of 3:30.71. The cohort of Barringer, Jake GoguenMilan Saric, and Alex Roderick checked in at 3:35.26.

Seattle U will enter a three-week break before returning to scheduled action at Puget Sound on Nov. 23.

SEATTLE, WA — On Saturday, The Simon Fraser Men’s Swim Team was in Washington to take part in a dual meet against Seattle University.

Seattle University swam a strong home meet in what was their last home meet of the season, but Simon Fraser still managed to enjoy a number of quality individual finishes. On the team scoreboard, Simon Fraser fell to Seattle U by a score of 165 to 90.

Simon Fraser’s Collyn Gagne continued his impressive run of form in the 200 IM, topping Shawn Fujii from Seattle U by almost a second to take top position in the discipline. Gagne also picked up another win in the 400 IM, as he took his second race of the event by a whopping 8 second margin.

Other winners included Mathew Fuller, who came out on top in the 500 freestyle, while Antonio Marino took 1stplace in the 100 breaststroke.

Swim Coach Maxime Maréchal-McCoy added his thoughts as his team prepares for the final event of the regular season: “It wasn’t an easy meet for our team, but relatively speaking, the performances weren’t too bad, with many of our swimmers working towards improving on their personal bests. We’re going to continue focusing and preparing for the West Coast Collegiate Open.”

Up next, Simon Fraser is headed to Vancouver Island for the West Coast Collegiate Open on Feb 8th & 9th.
