The Royal Canadian Mint issued a new collection of collector coins in order to celebrate the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games that will be taking place in Canada this summer.
In total, three coins were released in the ‘Toronto 2015 collectibles’. One of the coins, a silver one, incorporates the ancient technique of mokume gane and is the first time it has ever appeared on a coin. Mokume gane is a Japanese metalworking procedure. It has been used in this instance to show Canada’s national symbol.
The second coin, which is gold-plated, has the Pan Am Games gold medal design sketched into it in greater detail. The third coin is a silver coin with a maple leaf hologram.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the designer of these coins, is also responsible for the design of the Pan Am Games medals. With their innovative designs the Toronto 2015 Games will be the first Pan Am Games to feature Braille on all medals.
The release of the coins comes just shortly after the start of the Pan Am Games torch relay. The relay began on Saturday and is already on it’s 41-day journey back to Toronto for the Opening Ceremony of the Games.
The Pan Am Games will run from July 10-26th with the swimming portion taking place July 14-18th.
