How It Happened
On a day that celebrated the history of Rhode Island swimming, first-year head coach Lilli Falconer Deering‘s debut was impressive, as Rhode Island swept Springfield College (235-62) and Coast Guard (220-80) Saturday afternoon.
With more than 150 former URI swimmers and divers from the last 50 years on hand, Rhode Island won 10 of a possible 13 individual events plus two relay races. In each of the 10 individual events they won, the Rams claimed at least the top two places.
Standouts From the Pool
- The meet started with a Rhode Island sweep in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Michaela Degnan, Brooke Kelley, Jackie Triglia and Camryn Kreuscher won in a time of 1:49.51. Rhody also took second place with the team of Julia Renna, Hannah Benavides, Kamryn Paige and Mia Bonvissuto, followed by the team of Mackenzie Thomas, Julia Nevins, Jenna Salem and Grace Kennedy.
- Freshman Emma Lee won her debut in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:53.39, followed to the wall by classmate Maddie Tetreault (11:05.89).
- Sophomore Mia Bonvissuto was the winner in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:57.87 was just ahead of classmate Ellie Oswald (1:58.21). Junior Aimee Garcia was fourth in the race in a time of 1:59.88.
- Senior Michaela Degnan and junior Julia Renna gave Rhody a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
- Sophomore Jenna Salem (2:12.43) and junior Shauna Killane (2:16.78) were the first two to touch the wall in the 200-yard butterfly.
- It was a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard freestyle for URI. Sophomore Ellie Oswald won in 53.97 seconds, followed by Jordynn Brown (54.60) and Camryn Kreuscher (54.73).
- Freshman Kelsey McMenemy and junior Julia Renna were first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke.
- Junior Aimee Garcia and freshman Emma Lee placed first and second in the 500-yard freestyle.
- Garcia later added a win in the 200-yard individual medley, holding off URI freshman Casey Fusco for the victory.
- Freshman Jackie Triglia led a 1-2-3 finishe in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 59.64 edged sophomore Jenna Salem (59.91) and senior Michaela Degnan (1:00.18).
- Rhody closed out the meet with a win from the team of Camryn Kreuscher, Mia Bonvissuto, Ellie Oswald and Grace Kennedy in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
What’s Next
The Rams are off until Saturday, Nov. 6, when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. To take on Sacred Heart and Assumption. The meet begins at 12:30 p.m.
