In the semifinals of the women’s 100 IM, South Africa’s Rebecca Meder clocked a 58.98 to break her own African record. The previous record stood at 59.38, which she had set in the preliminaries of the event.
Her best time heading into SC Worlds was a 1:00.00, which she had swam at the South African National Championships in September of 2021. Kirsty Coventry is the only other African swimmer to have broken the 1:00.00 barrier in the event.

The splits show that Meder was much more aggressive in the semis than she was in the prelims. The largest difference comes from the middle 50 with back and breast, where she split a 32.22 in the semis compared to a 32.71 in prelims.
Meder will get another shot at lowering this record further, as she qualified for finals in 6th place.
Meder previously broke the South African Record this week in the 200 IM and was also on the African Record-breaking women’s 200 free and 400 free relays.
