Purdue’s Lew Gerbrandt Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

Purdue’s Lew Gerbrandt earned Big Ten swimmer of the week honors after winning the 100 fly (55.86) and 200 IM (2:07.81) at the Ohio State Invite. Freshman of the week went to Ohio State’s Mikayla Murphy, who won the 100 (54.73) and 200 (1:57.33) backstrokes at the invite.

Lew Gerbrandt, Purdue

Sr. – Butte, Mont. – Butte

  • Collected a trio of first-place finishes at the Ohio State Winter Invite
  • Recorded a pair of individual wins in the 100-yard butterfly (55.86) and 200-yard individual medley (2:07.81)
  • Contributed to a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.03) as the butterfly leg, and swam the 100-yard freestyle in 54.29 seconds
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns her first career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award

Mikayla Murphy, Ohio State

Holland Ohio – St. Ursula Academy

  • Recorded first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events at the Ohio State Winter Invite
  • Posted career-best times in the 100-yard backstroke (54.73), 200-yard backstroke (1:57.33) and 500-yard freestyle (4:53.40)
  • Times in both backstroke events are NCAA provisional qualifying standards
  • Earns her first career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Ohio State Freshman of the Week: Brittany Menninger (Feb. 10, 2015)
