Poolesville Sweeps All Relays for Maryland 3A/2A/1A States Girls’ and Boys’ Win

The Poolesville boys and girls swept the state titles at the 2020 Maryland 3A/2A/1A State Championships. The boys won their 9th-straight title, while the girls earned their 7th-straight title. They won 10 event titles at the meet, including a sweep of all the boys’ and girls’ relays.

  • Joshua Hou (25.24 back), Ben Nachod (27.08 breast), Maxwell Chen (23.58 fly), and Kenny Song (21.40 free) won the boys’ 200 medley relay in 1:37.30 to open the meet.
  • Sophie Elliot (27.50 back), Helena Narisu (30.29 breast), Anna Li (25.89 fly), and Lina Abzakh (24.89 free) won the girls’ race in 1:48.57
  • In the boys’ 200 free relay, Minsu Kim (22.59 leadoff), Nachod (22.98), Konnor Chen (21.84), and Jonathan Ye (21.96) combined for a 1:29.37 win.
  • The girls put together a 1:41.94 victory with Sofie Allison (26.16 leadoff), Abzakh (25.37), Helen Matia (25.47), and Moshelle Borjigin (24.94).
  • Kim (50.22 leadoff), Song (47.74), Ye (48.45), and Chen (47.88) won the boys’ 400 free relay in 3:14.29.
  • The girls’ closed the meet with a 3:35.48 win by Elliot (54.71 leadoff), Narisu (54.41), Li (54.15), and Borjigin (52.21).

In addition to their contributions to the winning relays, Borjigin, Narisu, and Song won titles individually. Borjigin swept her individual races. She was just a tenth shy of her best as she dominated the 200 free in 1:52.17. In the 500 free, she put up a 5:05.77 for the title, leading a 1-2 finish with Elliot (5:10.47).

Narisu dropped over a second to win the 200 IM, breaking 2:10 for the first time in 2:09.73. Song took the Poolesville boys’ only individual win. He made a big drop in the 50 free, as his 21.71 was his first swim under 22 and a best by almost a second.

Rockville freshman Toby Barnett was the youngest boys’ winner. He raced to a 1:54.71 in the 200 IM. He also earned a bronze in the 100 breast. Damascus’ AJ Navaleza won that race in 57.19, while La Plata’s Kristopher Schueller took silver in 57.74.

Damascus sophomore Carly Sebring swept the girls’ sprints, posting a 23.69 in the 50 free and a 50.90 in the 100 free. She has 2 more years to chase down the Meet Records, which stand at a23.10 in the 50 free and a 50.02 in the 100 free set by UVA All-American Morgan Hill in 2016. Sebring’s 50 free best (23.04) from 2018 is already under the record.
