Ponti, Kost, Mityukov Break National Records At 2021 Swiss LC Champs

2021 Swiss Long Course Championships

Last weekend, Swiss swimmers duked it out in Uster at the 2021 Swiss Long Course Championships, where three national records were broken. Likewise, three new Swiss swimmers swam under FINA’s Olympic A standards, which is an automatic qualification.

Nailing the men’s 100 back national record was Roman Mityukov at 54.04, who improved his lifetime best of 54.22 from February’s FFN Golden Tour in Nice, France. Mityukov is now less than two-tenths away from the FINA A cut of 53.85. Mityukov also put up top times in the 100 free (48.74, prelims) and 200 back (1:58.01), both just off their respective qualification standards of 48.57 and 1:57.58.

In the men’s 200 free, Antonio Djakovic took wins in the 200 free (1:46.78) and 400 free (3:50.36), winning by 14 seconds in the latter event. Djakovic also cleared the FINA Olympic A cut of 1:47.02 by a smidge. Placing second in the 200 free was Mityukov, nailing the wall at 1:47.06. In the 100 free, Djakovic placed 2nd in prelims at 49.14. Quirin Rusch went on to win the final at 50.55.

Also breaking a national record was Noe Ponti, who minted a new Swiss record in the 800 free at 8:06.64. Ponti also picked up wins in the 50 fly (23.55), 100 fly (51.70), and 200 fly (1:57.83), sweeping all three butterfly events. Recently, the NC State recruit broke the 100 fly national record in December 2020 at 51.15.

The third national record-breaker of the meet was Nina Kost, registering a new women’s 100 back record of 1:00.66, just missing the FINA A cut of 1:00.25. Kost also took home wins in the 50 free (25.69), 100 free (55.32), and 50 back (28.35).

Joining the multi-event winners club were Maria Ugolkova and Lisa Mamie. Ugolkova won the 200 free (2:00.57), 100 fly (1:00.32), and 200 IM (2:12.36), clearing the 2:12.56 Olympic A cut. She also tied Kost’s 55.32 winning time during the 100 free final. Mamie, on the other hand, took wins in the 50 breast (31.89), 100 breast (1:07.67), 200 breast (2:26.66),  and 400 IM (4:53.96).

In the men’s 200 IM, Jeremy Desplanches swim the top time of the event at 1:58.86, clearing the FINA A cut of 1:59.67. Desplanches owns a season best of 1:57.50 from the Marseille stop of the 2021 FFN Golden Tour.
