OSU Buckeyes Open New Year Against Kentucky

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State swimming and diving program will open the New Year with a head-to-head meet against the University of Kentucky. The two-day meet will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3 and resume at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4.

On Dec. 11, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) ranked the Buckeye men No. 16 in the TYR Top 25 Dual Meet Poll while the Ohio State women came in at No. 18. In the December NCAA power rankings, the men placed No. 7 after starting the season with a 3-2 record. The women have started the season with a nearly perfect 5-1 record.

MEET SCHEDULE

Friday’s events will be raced in long course meters and will go unscored. Day one of competition is slated to begin at 4 p.m. and will include 12 events alternating women and men.

Saturday’s races will be scored and competed in short course yards. The 16 event default format will begin at 10 a.m. and alternate women and men.

On Friday, 3-meter diving will begin at 3 p.m. while 1-meter diving will begin at 4:30 p.m. Platform diving will commence Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Last Time Out

The Ohio State swimming and diving program finished out 2019 with two first-place finishes at the 14th annual Ohio State Invitational. The women placed first out of eight teams with a total of 2,518.50 points while the men also took first with a score of 2,436.50, overtaking the remaining field of four.

On the women’s side, senior Kathrin Demler was the highest women point scorer of the meet with 154 total points for the Scarlet and Gray. Senior Molly Kowal earned 123 points for the Buckeye women while junior Katie Trace added another 114 points. In diving, Lexie Barker was the highest point scorer for the women with 93 total points.

For the men, junior Paul DeLakis was the third highest point scorer of the meet and led the Buckeye men with 117 points. He was followed by Cameron Craig with 114 points and diver Jacob Fielding with 112 total points. Fielding placed first on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards while the Buckeye men swept both events. Kyle Siler finished second and third on the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively while Lyle Yost finished third on the 1-meter and second on the 3-meter.

Scouting Kentucky

The Buckeyes swam against the Wildcats at the Ohio State Invitational with the Kentucky women finishing second, 172 points behind the Buckeyes and the Kentucky men placing fifth with a score of 1768.50. Behind Demler, the Kentucky women had the next three highest individual point scorers at the Invitational. Senior Ali Galyer secured 140 points to lead the Wildcats while junior Bailey Bonnett scored 128 points and freshman Gillian Davey notched another 124 points. The No. 13-ranked Wildcat women are 4-3 this season after getting out to an early 3-0 record with wins against Indiana, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

On the men’s side, the Wildcats received votes in the Top 25 Dual Meet Poll after previously coming in at No. 21. At the OSU Invitational, senior Peter Wetzlar finished 12th overall in individual points with 100 while sophomore diver Mingli Zhang was the next highest Wildcat with 87 points. The Kentucky men are 2-4 this season with wins over Notre Dame and South Carolina in October.
