2025 European Junior Championships

Filip Nowacki won his second individual gold medal of the meet in the 100 breaststroke on Day 6 of the European Junior Championships in Samorin tonight, hacking nearly four-tenths off his previous best set just yesterday to go 59.59. He has now dropped 0.66 seconds this week, and also overtakes Adam Peaty‘s British 18&U mark of 59.92, set two years before he set his first World Record.

The previous 17-year-old mark stood at the 59.96 he went to lead the semi-finals yesterday, and prior to that had been held by Singapore Worlds team member Max Morgan in 1:00.10.  He took most of the time off tonight in the first 50, where he split 28.03 to 28.34, before coming home slightly faster again tonight in 31.56.

Nowacki already had two gold medals to his name so far in Šamorín, both stemming from Day 4 when he ripped 2:08.32 to upgrade from silver to gold in the 200 breast from a year ago and shatter the European Junior Record in the process, and another European Junior Record in the mixed 4×100 medley relay where he popped a 59.25 breast split. His swim in the 200 breast made him the fifth-quickest British man of all time in the event and sits as the second-fastest 17-year-old and under swimmer of all time, while ranking fifth in the all-time junior rankings.

The teenager, who trains at Millfield under coach Kieron Piper but spent his age group days under the guidance of Nathan Jegou with the Jersey Tigers Swimming Club, was second in the 100 last year so has upgraded his hardware in both breaststroke distances. He will compete in the Men’s 4×100 medley relay to cap off the session, where Great Britain will swim in lane 1 tonight after qualifying 7th in 3:43.15.
