North Dakota Still Undefeated After Win Over South Dakota State

North Dakota remains undefeated for the 2015-16 season after defeating the South Dakota State Jacks this week. The women claimed a 215-85 victory, while the men won 171-129. North Dakota’s Jess Warfield highlighted the dual with a new best time in the 100 back, a 58.10.

North Dakota:

GRAND FORKS, N.D.– The University of North Dakota swimming and diving teams posted a pair of dual wins to remain perfect on the young season. The UND women outscored the Jacks, 215-85 to go to 3-0 while the North Dakota men were 171-129 winners for a 2-0 overall dual meet record this season.

“It was a wonderful meet, we’ve had a tough two-week training cycle,” UND head swimming coach Chris Maiello said. “Our team performances were better than expected and really encouraging as we go to an Olympic training center in Colorado Spring, Colo., next week.

Jess Warfield went 58.21 for a lifetime best in the 100 backstroke. Those are the swims we get excited for and it was a great moment for her. Maddie Derby is continuing to develop every season and it’s fun to watch her grow. It’s going to be an exciting championship season when we get to that point.

Colin MacQuarrie had another great meet. We’re excited in the direction our sprints are going.”

The women’s 200 medley relay started the meet with a win in 1:47.55 while the 400 free relay finished it off with a 3:37.22 win. Gabi Liedy took the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:42.54 time and was the 500 free winner as well (5:12.82). Derby had three first-place individual finishes, clocking a 58.21 time in the 100 backstroke to just beat out teammate Jess Warfield, who went 58.98. Derby also won the 200 backstroke, going 2:04.83 and the 200 IM (2:10.81). Steph Frey won the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:04.38 and later also took the 100 free (52.92). Marlena Pigliacampi went 2:06.31 in the 200 butterfly. Courtney Funk beat the competition in the 50 freestyle with a winning 23.97 time. Danica Dutt picked-up a win in the 100 butterfly (56.43).

The men’s 200 medley relay won in 1:33.24. Jacob Wielinski continued his impressive start to his collegiate career with three individual wins. He easily outdistanced the competition with a 9:25.87 time in the 1,000 free, a 4:36.84 showing in the 500 free and a winning 1:57.05 time in the 200 IM. Aaron Chanas-LaRue was the 200 free champ with a 1:41.05 clocking. Dylan Baptist won the 100 back (52.68), out-touching teammate Nick Lawson (52.77). MacQuarrie swam a 20.84 for the 50 free title and was the 100 free champ with a 46.24 time. Sam Marlow won the 200 backstroke (1:53.31) and Matt Koken picked up a first-place in the 100 butterfly (51.84).

In diving, the UND women’s divers had an impressive showing, going 1-2-3 from the 3-meter board withAriana Brace recorded the winning 219.38 score. Alexis Eissinger was the top UND finisher in the 1-meter, scoring 220.13 for second place.

On the men’s side, Clayton Metcalf finished second in the 3-meter dive (262.13) and also was runner-up in the 1-meter event (246.08).

“We are improving and that’s what this time of the season is about– improving,” UND diving coach Brian Strom said. “It’s a matter of being able to repeat the actions on call when it’s your turn to get up and dive and that takes some time with a group full of sophomores and freshmen, it just takes some time to develop.”

North Dakota heads to the Air Force Academy for a Saturday duals before returning home to host Minnesota on Nov. 7.

South Dakota State:

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota claimed 13 of 16 event titles, defeating South Dakota State, 215-85, in a women’s swimming and diving dual Saturday afternoon at the Hyslop Sports Center.

The Jackrabbits, who were competing in their season opener, were paced in the swimming events by Julia Bodnaruk and Kristin Erf. A junior from Lakeville, Minnesota, Bodnaruk claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.33 seconds.

Erf, a sophomore from Oakdale, Minnesota, led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top two places in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a winning time of 2:25.29. Kayce Smith was second in 2:27.38. Erf added a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.94), while Smith took third in the 200 individual medley (2:13.42).

Olivia Olesiak closed out the individual titles for the Jackrabbits by winning the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 223.65 points.

Hadlie Overhue contributed a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle as she was edged by UND’s Gabi Leidy by .11 seconds. Leidy won the 500 freestyle in 5:12.82, and added a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.54). Maddie Derby claimed three individual events for UND, winning the 100 backstroke (:58.21),  200 backstroke (2:04.83) and 200 individual medley (2:10.81).

The Jackrabbits resume action Friday, hosting the University of Northern Iowa in dual action. Start time is 4 p.m. at the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center Pool.
