While competing on day one of the 2023 Bergen Swim Festival, Nicholas Lia became the first-ever Norwegian man to dip under the 22-second barrier in the 50m freestyle.

22-year-old Lia took the opportunity to fire off a new record when competing in the 100m freestyle heats and final in Bergen. In the morning, Lia clocked a first 50m of 22.09 to shave .01 off his lifetime best of 22.10 from 2021. That previous PB stood as the Norwegian national record.

Then in the 100m final last night, Lia fired off a time of 21.98 for his first 50m to make history.

Lia also owns the Norwegian national record in the men’s 50m fly in 23.33 from 2021 so we’ll see what the OI Svømming athlete can produce when that final comes around.

Additional Notes

  • 26-year-old Henrik Christiansen posted a time of 14:57.85 to top the men’s 1500m free podium by over a minute. The multi-international medalist now ranks 12th in the world on the season and qualifies for this summer’s World Championships.
  • Erik Persson got to the wall over 4 seconds ahead of the competition en route to winning the men’s 200m breast. He notched a result of 2:09.35 to dip under the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard for Fukuoka.
  • Britta Koehorst hit a mark of 56.39 to take the women’s 100m freestyle over Malene Rypestol who snagged silver in 56.97.

The competition to even make semi’s at worlds, let alone the finals is starting to heat up considering the number of sub 22 swims this season as well as those that have yet to do so, but will definitely perform when it comes

Never underestimate a sub 22 swimmer, manaudou went under 22 sec for the first time at french olympic trials in 2012 , and you know what happened next..

It seems that so many people this season have and are going under 22 seconds. Would not shock me to see this being the year with the most ever 21 points.
