New Hampshire Maintain The Lead After Day 2 @ America East Conference

Coming off of a prominent night 1, the New Hampshire Wildcats started day 2 finals on the right foot, with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 free. Jess Harper was the first to the wall in a new conference record time of 4:48.29, shedding more than half a second of off the previous 7-year old record, 4:49.04. Next to the wall was Brittany Moffatt, who finished in 4:53.34, just ahead of teammate Brittany Driscoll, who finished in 4:53.75.

Another conference record fell in the next event, when Emily Escobedo of UMBC touched the pads in NCAA ‘B-cut’ time of 1:57.32, shattering the previous record of 1:59.12. Her teammate Kayla Lilly finished behind her in 2:03.77 and Bettina Caspers of the Wildcats was 3rd in 2:04.86.

With strong preliminary swims this morning, nothing above 23 seconds got a spot in the A final, making it a race to watch. In the final it was New Hampshire’s Liza Baykova who took the victory with a time of 23.44, 2nd was UMBC’s Kristie Langford in 23.63 and 3rd was Vermont’s Sarah Mantz in 23.67.

In the 200 free relay, it was a race right to the finish with the top 3 teams finishing in 1:34. At the touch it was Vermont’s A team of Courtney Gray, Mantz, Kira Hancock and Christa Weaver who clocked in in 1:34.09, ahead of New Hampshire (1:34.21) and UMBC (1:34.46).

After night 2, New Hampshire remains in the lead with 299 points, UMBC 2nd with 282 points and Vermont 3rd with 240 points.
