Mizzou Tigers Dominate at Final Session of the Mizzou Invite

After three days of intense competition, both the Mizzou women and men pulled out impressive wins over the rest of the schools at the 2014 Mizzou Invite. With several NCAA championship cut times and season bests achieved, the meet served as a turning point for many of the teams as they gauge their preparedness for their end of season meets. The final session of the Mizzou Invite was action packed and exciting, and the Tigers finished strong to secure their impressive win. Here is a recap of each event from Saturday night:

1650 Freestyle

Mizzou’s Kira Zubar claimed the women’s mile with a time of 16:30.73. She was chased by West Virginia’s Emma Skelley, who finished in a time of 16:36.21, and Kayla Dlugopolski, touching in a time of 16:55.60. In the men’s event, Mizzou also snatched the top spot. Eagan Groome finished first in a time of 15:19.99, followed by Drury University’s Alec Morris and Mizzou’s Nick Davis. Morris and Davis touched in times of 15:27.02 and 15:38.62, respectively.

200 Backstroke

Hannah Stevens of Mizzou lowered her season best time by 1.29 seconds, finishing in 1:52.98. She was nearly three seconds ahead of the next swimmer, Silvia Scalia of Florida International, who finished in 1:55.55. Carter Griffin of Mizzou took first place in the men’s event, posting a time of 1:42.13. Behind Griffin were Mizzou’s Austin Fish (1:42.13) and Drury’s Sean Feher (1:44.62).

100 Freestyle

Wen Xu of Drury finished first in the women’s 100 Freestyle with a time of 49.13, an NCAA Division II A cut time. She was able to edge out Mizzou’s Dani Barbiea and Rachel Hayden, who finished in times of 49.23 and 29.50, respectively. In the men’s event, Michael Chadwick of Mizzou won in a time 42.70, trailed by Tom Paco-Pedroni of UNLV (43.38) and Daniel Rzadkowski of Drury (43.55).

200 Breaststroke

Abby Duncan of Mizzou in a time of 2:09.55, followed by Mizzou’s Katharine Ross (2:11.74) and Lauren Stoeckle (2:13.94). Mizzou claimed the top four times and some serious points in the men’s event, with Sam Tierney clocking a winning time of 1:52.67. Igor Kozlovskij (1:55.67), Mark Conroy (1:58.09), and Jordy Groters (1:58.77) took second, third, and fourth place for the Tigers.

200 Butterfly

Mizzou’s Sharli Brady won the Women’s 200 Butterfly in a time of 1:57.53, two seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Valerie Inghels of FIU (1:59.37). Mizzou’s Mack Darragh placed first for the men, touching the wall in a time of 1:43.91, followed by teammate Andrew Phillips in 1:45.06 and UNLV’s Balint Batka in a 1:45.78.

400 Freestyle Relay

The Mizzou Invite came to a close with the Men’s and Women’s 400 Freestyle Relays. In the women’s event, Mizzou’s A Relay of Rachel Hayden, Dani Barbiea, Hannah Stevens, and Anna Patterson claimed the big win in a time of 3:17.36. Illinois took second in 3:22.56, followed by Drury in 3:23.61. In the men’s event, UNLV’s Henrique Machado, Or Sabatier, Paco-Pedroni, and Dillon Virva took first in 2:53.53, narrowly edging out Mizzou (2:53.61). In third place was Drury in a time of 2:54.86.
