Bowling Green State:

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program used a victory in the 400 freestyle relay in Friday’s final event to take home a 151-149 victory in a dual meet against the Miami RedHawks. BGSU won 10 events, and freshman Claire Stam set a school record in the 3-meter dive to help the Falcons to the narrow victory. It was the Falcons’ first dual meet win over Miami since the turn of the century.

“Today was an exciting meet that came down to the final event which is always thrilling for the fans,” head coach Matt Ense said. “We are happy with the final outcome, but also realize there is a lot of work left to get ready for the MAC Championships in just over a month from now. Thank you to all of our fans that were able to come out to Cooper Pool, and all of our fans that were able to watch on ESPN3.”

BGSU started the dual meet in commanding fashion, winning six of the first seven swimming events before the 3-meter diving. Perhaps the highlight of the day came in that 3-meter diving event, where Stam set a new school record with a 266.63 for a third-place finish. Miami, who features a very experienced and talented diving program, took the top two places – including Pei Lin who set a new Cooper Pool record with a 379.88 in the event.

The meet started with the Orange and Brown taking home first and second in the 400 Medley Relay. The winning team for the Falcons featured Maya Skorupski, Daniela Carrillo, Jordan Bullock and Megan Larson. In the very next event, Natalie Criswell finished first in the 1000 free – her first of two victories in the meet. Criswell was also victorious in the 500 free. The 400 Medley Relay team featured three swimmers who won individual events in the meet, as well. Carrillo won two individual events, taking home first in the 100 and 200 breast. Bullock (200 fly) and Skorupski (100 back) also won individual swims on Friday afternoon.

Victoria Griffin was the third Falcon to win two individual events in the meet, as BGSU dominated the 500 and 100 free swims. Griffin won both events, while Kayla Effinger took home second in both right behind Griffin. BGSU’s eighth individual win (of 12 events) came fromFranziska Wohlert who finished first in the 200 back.

After 13 events, Bowling Green led Miami by a comfortable margin of 133-112, but the RedHawks finished top three in the 1-meter diving and also took the top two spots in the 200 IM. The meet would come down to the 400 Free Relay, as 17 points were still left to be had. With the Falcons trailing 143-140, it came down to the winner of the day’s final events. BGSU’s team of Griffin, Effinger, Larson and Hannah Newman began the race with a lead, but the tough RedHawks closed in on the lead late in the race. Each swimmer turned in fast legs for the Falcons’ second-best time in the event all season (3:28.42) and Newman got to the wall first for the Falcons’ victory.

With the win, BGSU improves to 4-1 on the season in dual meets. The Falcons will return to action next Friday (Jan. 29) at Eastern Michigan before hosting Senior Day against Oakland and Youngstown State at 5:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 5.
