Lincoln Charter won its first-ever state championship, taking home the title at the 1A/2A NCHSAA championships (smaller schools).

In comparison, last year Lincoln Charter came in 5th, behind Carrborro (1st), Elkin (2nd), Community School of Davidson (3rd), and Salisbury (4th).

The Lincolnton-based school relied heavily on their depth but was aided by junior Grace Wilson, who swam to a win in the 200 free with a personal best time of 1:57.03. She shot up the rankings this year, having only placed 6th in the 200 free last year, but only one other swimmer who beat her last year swam the event this year–Valeria Hernandez-Pena, who came in 2nd at 1:58.46.

Wilson also led the 400 free relay to 2nd place, but it was Elkin that swept all three relays.

Elkin’s relays featured the same three swimmers–Amelia Presley, Sophie Welborn, Mattie Wells, and Morgan Wiles. They swam 1:50.90 in the 200 medley, 1:41.39 in the 200 free relay, and 3:43.34 in the 400 free relay. As members of all three relays, the four girls were only able to swim one individual event, therefore maximizing the relay points they could earn but minimizing their ability to earn individual points, and none of the Elkin women won an individual event.

This team had a proven success rate. They also won the 200 medley last year and came in 2nd in the 200 free relay, too.

There were two individual dual-event winners at the meet. Eno River Academy sophomore Mary Shanahan won the 100 fly in a personal best of 55.22, and the 100 back in another personal best of 55.73. In the 100 fly, she won by almost three seconds. Her performances earned her the Most Outstanding Swimmer honor, and the meet marks her first time winning those two events.

The only winner in a younger grade than Shanahan was freshman Skylar Jones, who won the 100 breast.

Voyager Academy senior and UNC commit Ede Kosik also won two events: the 100 free (51.11) and 500 free (5:05.61). Kosik is a three-peat winner in the 100 free, having also won in her sophomore and junior year.

Other top swims:

  • 200 IM: Senior Leah Sandock, Union Academy, 2:08.45. Sandock’s time was just off her best time of 2:07.83. Sandock is a Davidson College commit. Sandock didn’t swim the event last year.
  • 50 free: Junior Eliana White, Community School of Davidson, 23.87. The junior’s best time is 23.75, but she beat her prelims time of 23.88. Overall, her time was faster than last year’s winning time, Lindy Bilden’s 24.00.
  • 100 breast: Freshman Skylar Jones, John M. Morehead High School, 1:09.30. Jones swam a best time at the state meet.
