Liberty Wins Second Meet of the Weekend Topping Campbell on Saturday

Following a victory over UNC-Asheville on Friday, the Flames traveled to Campbell University to face off in the Nathan Johnson Aquatic Center against their second conference foe of the weekend.  The Flames, who have won the past two Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships, have now won 23 consecutive dual meets against CCSA opponents.

Campbell was strong in the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles. In the 50 and 100, it was sophomore Colleen Renshaw leading the team, posting times of 24.20 and 53.23. Renshaw also helped Campbell’s 400 free relay take first, anchoring it in 52.61.

In the 200 free it was Campbell junior Annie Sanchez who got her hand on the wall first. Sanchez out-touched Liberty’s Emma Hazel (1:54.74), getting her hand on the wall in 1:54.60. Sanchez is the school record holder in the event, holding a time of 1:49.49 from 2019.

For the Flames, the top performances came from a pair of seniors, Payton Keiner and Lindsey Cohee. Keiner swept the backstroke events (56.98/2:03.58), while Cohee led the way in both butterfly events (57.13/2:04.91).

Liberty posted the top two finishes in three different events throughout the meet. The Flames took the top spots in the 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 back. In the 100 breast the top spot went to Heather Gardner, a freshman. This marked Gardner’s first collegiate victory.

The Flames will next return to the pool on November 20th when they host the TYR ’85 Invitational, while the Camels play host to Georgia Southern this weekend before traveling to Liberty at the end of November.

Other Notable Swims

  • Taking second in the 200 fly in 2:08.45, Liberty freshman Chloe Harris now owns the programs 8th fastest time in the event.
  • Campbell freshman Maria Kristjansdottir won her second straight 200 breast, finishing in 2:24.75. She also added a 2nd place finish in the 400 IM.
  • Avery Rogers (Campbell) held off two Liberty swimmers to touch first in the 1000 free (10:58.17).
