2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

DAY 3 PRELIMS START LIST

Kate Douglass will be going all-in on her 100 free on the final day of competition here in Carmel.

One of three women still in the running to get three wins at this meet and go for the 9/9 for the whole series (alongside Regan Smith and Gretchen Walsh), Douglass has decided to put her eggs in the 100 free basket. In line with her overall distancing from the event this year, Douglass scratched the 200 IM, in which she was the top seed and world record holder. The #1 spot in that event now goes to teammate Alex Walsh.

Douglass also sits as the #1 seed in the 100 free by over a second. Leading the other circle-seeded heats are Pole Katarzyna Wasick and 2025 World Championships silver medalist Mollie O’callaghan. O’Callaghan also scratched an event herself, sitting out of the 100 fly in preparation for this event.

The women’s 200 IM proved a popular race to scratch this morning, as a total of 13 women did so, the most of any event. Of note, Douglass’ fellow World Championship medalists Marrit Steenbergen and Roos Vanotterdijk will also forgo a 200 IM swim in favor of the 100 free.

Several U.S. National Teamers dropped one of their multiple events for the session. This includes Alex Shackell (100 free), Katharine Berkoff (200 back), and Trenton Julian (200 free).

In typical Sunday-of-a-meet fashion, there were more scratches today than on Friday or Saturday morning. Many of these scratches come from U.S. club swimmers.

I thought she was coming back to the 2IM this year? It’s really difficult to understand why she hates it so much when she’s so incredible at it, but I guess these things aren’t always logical.

Last time she discussed it (prior to Worlds trials), she seemed to indicate she wouldn’t be switching up her event line-ups until after Pan Pacs. Seeing how much of an asset she’s becoming on relays, I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t return to it.

The heats/semis of the W 200 IM conflicts with the heats/final of the W 4 x 100 FR-R on Day 1 of the World Aquatics Championships.
