Women’s Meet Recap
The three collegiate women’s swim programs in the state of Kansas converged on the state capital of Topeka over the weekend to compete in the Sunflower Showdown. The annual meet first took place in the fall of 2019, was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned for the 2021-2022 season. The meet’s unique format brings together the NCAA Division I Kansas Jayhawks, NAIA program University of Saint Mary, and the junior college program at Barton Community College.
The Jayhawks dominated the three-team event, finishing 1-2-3 in every event. Senior Kate Steward was a standout for Kansas, claiming victories in the 200 IM with a 2:05.26 and 100 breast with a 1:03.74. The Bartlesville, Oklahoma native is the Kansas school record holder in both the 200 IM and the 200 breast and was named an All-American in 2020 after qualifying for the eventually-canceled 2020 NCAA Championships.
Fellow Jayhawk senior All-American and NCAA Qualifier Dewi Blose won the 100 back in 58.22. The Stillwater, Oklahoma native also led off Kansas’ 200 free relay with a 24.47, teaming up with Autumn Looney, Keyla Brown and Claudia Dougan to take the win in 1:36.83. The two All-Americans Blose and Steward closed the meet by teaming with Kaitlyn Witt and Brown to win the 200 medley relay in 1:44.77.
Barton’s highest finish in the meet came in the 100 breast, as Barton’s Dom Cos touched the wall in 1:09.26 to finish in fourth behind a trio of Jayhawks. The freshman from Colorado also swam on the school’s A medley relay, splitting 32.36.
St. Mary’s highest finish came in the 500 free, courtesy of Kelsey Taylor’s 7th place finish in 5:42.86. The Wichita, Kansas native also posted a 12th place finish in the 100 fly with a 1:07.90.

Kansas returns to the pool on October 15th for its alumni meet. Barton heads on the road to take on Iowa Central Community College on October 16th, while St. Mary will host the Spire Relays at home on October 16th.
Men’s Meet Recap
Barton Community College dominated In the men’s version of the meet, winning every individual event and both relays. Enzo Vogt da Silva was the star for Barton, winning the 50 (22.13), 200 (1:46.54) and 500 free (4:49.75). The Venezuelan native also posted the fastest split on Barton’s winning 200 free relay.
Barton College sophomore Johan Cue Carrillo put up a massive swim in the 100 breast, touching first in 56.24. The La Habana, Cuba native was the 2021 NJCAA national champion in the 50 and 100 breast last spring, finishing in 24.53 and 53.37, respectively.
Saint Mary’s top finisher came in the 50 free, where freshman Blake Jorgens touched second in 22.29.
