The Iowa Hawkeyes broke 7 pool records and won 15 of 16 events to top in-state rivals Iowa State in a road meet Friday night.
Emma Sougstad took down four of those pool records herself in a big night for the junior. Sougstad swept the breaststroke events with a 1:00.50 in the 100 and a 2:12.95 in the 200, both pool records at the Iowa State facility. Sougstad would also win the 200 IM in 2:01.39, another pool record.
Sougstad swam breaststroke on the pool record-setting 200 medley relay. Allie Orvis, Kelly McNamara, and Olivia Kabacinski rounded out the relay, which went 1:40.29.
Kabacinski also won four events on the night. She took the 100 free (50.01) and 200 free (1:48.92), setting a pool record in the former event. At the end of the meet, she would join Meghan Lavelle, Jennifer Weigand and Carly O’Brien to go 3:22.84 in the 400 free relay, yet another pool record.
The other pool record came in the 200 fly, where sophomore Tereysa Lehnertz went 1:59.22 for the win.
Hawkeye freshman Abbey Schneider swept the distance races, going 10:03.34 in the 1000 free and 4:53.32 in the 500. The other double winner was Lavelle, who took the 100 back (54.49) and 200 back (1:58.23).
Other Iowa winners included Mekenna Scheitlin in the 50 free (23.30) and McNamara in the 100 fly (54.11).
Iowa State had its best finish on the diving boards, where senior Elyse Brouillette scored 312.83 points to win on 3-meter. Fellow Cyclone Maggie James was second on 1-meter, as Iowa’s Morgan Rafferty picked up the win in 296.02 points.
Iowa State’s Kasey Roberts was also second behind Sougstad in both the 100 breast and 200 IM, and Savanna Townsend came within four tenths of a second of nipping the 50 free title from Scheitlin.
