IOC Reprimands 3 of 4 2024 Olympic Bid Cities, Including L.A., in Rio

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

The International Olympic Committee has issued reprimands to three of the four cities in the official running to host the 2024 Olympic Games. While the IOC did not specify which cities had been reprimanded, Steve Wilson, the AP European sports editor and president of the Olympic Journalists Association, tweeted:

At issue are IOC rules against lobbying by potential host cities during the Olympic Games.  Technically, the bid city is a separate entity from its country’s Olympic committee. The rules allow each bid city to host one press conference and mount an exhibit of up to 20 square meters in its country’s hospitality house, but that’s the extent of the campaigning it is allowed to do. The three bid cities had apparently invited media to visit their exhibitions, which is specifically against the rules.

The Roma 2024 delegation admitted to having received notice from the IOC. Sports Business Daily reported that Fabio Guadagnini, head of communications for Rome’s bid committee, said, “It surprised us a little: As you (and the IOC members) have seen, we have strictly respected the rules in Casa Italia: a 20-meter room, not a small and/or single logo of Roma 2024 outside of it, 12 Roma 2024 people in Rio to attend all the meetings of the Observer Program. If it’s wrong to invite someone to visit the house of the Olympic Italian committee, we respectfully will follow the instructions and will not do it. Seems to me quite clear.”

The fourth finalist, Budapest, was not involved in the reprimand.

I honestly don’t care what a city does to get the bid as long as it’s able to prove it has the financial resources to actually put on the games so we don’t get another rio

Rio actually seems to be doing quite well…far cry from the disaster we were led to believe might occur. Just pity the taxpayers of Brazil for the expenditure of finds they could have put to better use elsewhere.

Right now, we’re seeing what the media wants us to see about Rio. I suspect we’ll hear more in the months and years following Rio.

Just appeal. First to the IOC, then to WADA, then to FINA and all of the other associations, throw FIFA in there for sh_ts and grins, hit CAS last, and then rinse and repeat. Your reprimands will be rescinded in short order. Heck, you’ll probably be rewarded for it.

Dear IOC, go take some decisions on doping scandals before criticizing people who try their hardest to keep the Olympic dream alive.

The IOC shouldn’t be reprimanding any country! They’re lucking any city is bidding for future Games.
