Hutchins Named Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Wisconsin’s Matt Hutchins garnered Big Ten swimmer of the week honors after his performance at the Texas Invite. Hutchins set a new school record in the 1650, clocking a 14:38.14. Matt Barnard earned diver of the week honors once again after sweeping the diving events at the Jean K. Freeman invite.

Swimmer of the Week

Matt Hutchins, Wisconsin

Jr. – Christchurch, New Zealand

  • Finished in the top five in the 1,650-yard freestyle (first), 800-yard freestyle relay (second), 500-yard freestyle (third) and 200-yard freestyle (fifth) at the Texas Invitational
  • School-record time of 14:38.14 in the 1,650-yard freestyle is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and currently ranks first in the nation
  • Recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.77 in prelims; 1:35.95 in finals), 500-yard freestyle (4:15.64) and 800-yard freestyle relay (6:24.36)
  • Times in the 500-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay currently rank No. 6 and No. 7 in the nation, respectively
  • Earns his third career Swimmer of the Week honor

Diver of the Week

Matt Barnard, Minnesota

Jr. – Brisbane, Australia – Orniston College

  • Swept the diving events at the Jean K. Freeman Invitational at Minnesota, scoring 446.40 points in the one-meter event and 475.40 points on platform
  • Recorded NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks and Minnesota school records in both diving events
  • Earns his fifth career Diver of the Week honor

Freshman of the Week
Will Brenner, Iowa

Fr. – Ypsilanti, Mich. – Huron

  • Finished first in the one-meter diving event with 365.00 points, fourth in the three-meter event with 309.25 points and fourth on platform with 267.55 points at the Hawkeye Invitational
  • Score in the one-meter event is an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark and school record
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Iowa Freshman of the Week: Jerzy Twarowski (Nov. 4, 2015)
