Huskers Ready for Big Ten Championships

The Nebraska swimming and diving team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to compete at its fifth Big Ten Championships. The event, featuring seven sessions over four days, will be held at the University of Michigan’s Canham Natatorium.

The opening session is set for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., while the following three days will have preliminary sessions at 10 a.m., with finals following at 5:30 p.m.  The diving preliminary rounds and consolation finals will begin at 12 p.m. on the final three days of the meet.

Nebraska will aim to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish at the conference meet. The Huskers will look to returning top-24 finishers Alex Bilunas, Taryn Collura, Jordan Ehly, Samantha Hardewig, Bria Deveaux, Erin Oeltjen, Julia Roller, Katt Sickle, Anna Filipcic, Francesca Giganti and Nicole Schwery to help continue the program’s upward climb. At last season’s meet, the Huskers racked up nine top-16 finishes and 18 top-24 performances.

The University of Michigan’s Canham Natatorium has played host to seven Big Ten Championships, including the women’s meet in 1989, 1993 and 2002. The facility was also the site of the 1996 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The Canham Natatorium features a 50-meter pool, eight lanes wide. The facility also features an Olympic Tower, one-meter and three-meter springboards and a hot tub. The 59,000 square-foot facility can accommodate 1,200 people.

The Big Ten Championships will see NU’s nine seniors, Alex Bilunas, Taryn Collura, Michaela Cunningham, Bria Deveaux, Katie Ditter, Samantha Hardewig, Jacqueline Juffer, Nicole Schwery and Krista Van Wie competing together in their last conference meet.  The class has contributed 24 dual-meet victories, amassing 296 top-five finishes and 69 individual event titles over their careers.
