This year’s edition of the annual Euro Meet saw day one unfold from the Centre National Sportif et Culturel d’Coque. Domestic swimmers were taking a stand against athletes from France, Denmark, Belgium, and beyond.
The women’s 400m IM final saw 16-year-old Amalie Smith get to the wall first, with the British Age Record holder stopping the clock at 4:40.70 to beat the field by over six seconds.
Cyrielle Duhamel snagged the silver in 4:47.33 with Germany’s Noelle Benkler rounding out the podium in 4:50.01.
As for Smith, the teen’s career-swiftest performance remains at the 4:35.49 notched for silver at the 2025 World Junior Championships.
Danish ace Helena Rosendahl Bach got it done for gold in the women’s 200m fly, establishing a new meet record to boot.
25-year-old Bach posted a time of 2:08.03 to capture the top spot, with her effort sitting just outside the list of her top 10 personal performances. The Dane’s career-quickest outing remains at the 2:06.65 logged in the semi-finals of the event at the 2024 Olympic Games. There in Paris, Bach ultimately placed an impressive 4th but in a slower time of 2:07.11.
Bach’s time here overtook the former meet benchmark of 2:08.18 retired German Olympian Franziska Hentke put on the books in 2018.
Silver last night went to England’s Emily Richards (nee Large) who touched in 2:08.65 followed by her British teammate Ciara Shlosshan‘s mark of 2:09.65.
Richards’ lifetime best of 2:07.33 from 2023 rendered her GBR’s 7th-best performer in history.
In a tight battle to the wall, it was Germany’s Luca Armbruster who claimed the victory in the men’s 50m butterfly.
Armbruster produced a super-solid performance of 24.43 to defeat England’s Gabriel Shepherd and the Dutchman Thomas Verhoeven by a narrow margin. The former settled for silver in 23.66 while the latter bagged the bronze in 23.73.
Armbruster sneaks into slot #19 among this season’s best performers worldwide.
Additional Notes
- 18-year-old World Junior Championships multi-gold medalist John Shortt of Ireland was too quick to catch in the men’s 100m back. The teen touched in 54.48 as the sole swimmer to delve into 54-second territory. Next to the wall was Frenchman Mathys Chouchaoui who secured silver in 55.09 followed by the Netherlands’ Noah Verreth who turned in a time of 55.72. Shortt’s PB stands pat at the 53.80 notched at the 2025 World Junior Championships.
- Sacha Velly of France came within striking distance of his lifetime best en route to topping the men’s 1500m freestyle podium. 20-year-old Velly registered 15:07.76 as the clear winner, beating the pack by over 21 seconds. GBR’s Tyler Melbourne-Smith posted 15:28.89 and teammate Ethan Kelly rounded out the podium in 15:39.11.
- Danish dynamo Martine Damborg did her thing in the women’s 50m fly, turning in a time of 26.44 as the victor. That was well off her PB of 25.80 from earning bronze at the 2025 World Junior Championships but enough to top the podium here. Poland’s Kornelia Fiedkiewicz sealed up silver in 26.63 and France’s Jeanne De Murcia‘s posting of 26.64 garnered her the bronze medal.
