Gretchen Walsh Of The United States Rips 23.72 50 Fly World Record

2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

The first stop of the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Carmel, Indiana, continued to bring the heat on day two, as Gretchen Walsh destroyed the World Record, World Cup Record and U.S. Open Record in the women’s 50m butterfly.

After establishing her dominance in the morning heats with a field-leading time of 24.13, already a new World Cup and U.S. Open Record, the University of Virginia Olympic multi-medalist crushed a final time of 23.72 to top the podium by nearly a second.

This evening’s final saw Australia’s Alex Perkins get to the wall in 24.64 as the silver medalist, while Belgian ace Roos Vanotterdijk rounded out the podium in 25.44.

Walsh held the previous World Record in this event, courtesy of the 23.94 she nailed during the semi-finals at the 2024 Short Course World Championships. Ultimately, there in Budapest, Walsh settled for gold in a slightly slower 24.01.

Walsh remains the sole woman in the entire world to have ever delved under the 24-second threshold in this event. The next-closest result remains at the 24.38 former WR holder Therese Alhammar of Sweden hit in 2009.

Biggest compliment is that this was an unsurprising shoulder shrug… I mean that in the best way.

How many swimmers/swims can you simply expect a WR from? Amazing.

To be fair, when SS was demolishing WRs left and right, it eventually got little attention as well since it was expected.

Mistake to drop it to 23.7 directly. Needed a long finish or some such so she could Mondo the record over the next month.
