Day four of the 2026 Commonwealth Games brought about the final of the women’s 400m IM, with a pair of Aussies and a Brit landing on the podium at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
When the dust settled it was World Championships silver medalist Jenna Forrester who got to the wall first, establishing a winning result of 4:31.19.
Amalie Smith of Great Britain, just 16 years of age, delivered a new lifetime best of 4:33.70 to snag the silver ahead of Aussie Ella Ramsay who rounded out the podium in 4:37.12.
As for Smith, her time tonight hacked well over a second off her former best-ever outing and British Age Record of 4:35.18. That older mark was put on the books just this past May at the AP Race London International. Prior to that, Smith’s PB rested at the 4:35.46 notched at the Aquatics GB Championships.

Smith ranks 5th in the world on the season and, despite her young age, is now Great Britain’s 3rd-fasetst woman in history, usurping world champion Freya Colbert.

Additionally, Smith’s performance represents a new European Junior Record, erasing the 4:34.96 Hungarian Vivien Jackl established in 2024.
Although Smith is no stranger to an international podium, this marks the teen’s first senior elite international medal. She entered these Games as the 200m IM and 400m IM silver medalist at last year’s World Junior Championships. She won both events at the 2025 European Junior Championships and followed up this year with Euro Jr medals in the 400m IM and 4x100m free relay.
