Gorbenko Breaks Fourth Different Israeli Record at 2021 Euros: 2:10.35 in 200IM

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Anastasia Gorbenko is continuing her onslaught through the Israeli swimming national record book with a national-best 2:10.35 in the 200 IM.

Gorbenko’s swim came in the 200 IM semifinals at the 2021 European Championships in Budapest. The 17-year-old was 2:12.61 in preliminaries this morning, qualifying 7th. But that swim also came just two events before Israel’s 4×200 free relay, where Gorbenko anchored in 1:58.77 as her relay qualified second.

Heading into finals, Gorbenko was set up to swim three events in the session. Yesterday, she qualified 7th in the 100 back, setting a national record and qualifying for today’s final. But Gorbenko scratched that race, focusing instead on the 200 IM semifinal and the 4×200 free relay.

The decision turned out to be a good one. Gorbenko was the fastest qualifier out of either semifinal in the IM, going 2:10.35. The time took more than a second and a half off of her standing Israeli record of 2:11.92 from the 2019 World Championships.

Gorbenko will have a chance to improve her record again in tomorrow night’s final. She’s already set national records in the following events this week, all during semifinals:

  • 100 back: 59.78 (semifinals)
  • 50 breast: 31.33 (opening split of 100 breast semifinals)
  • 100 breast: 1:06.74 (100 breast semifinals)
  • 200 IM: 2:10.35 (semifinals)
