2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Toronto

Women’s 100 Freestyle — Final

  • World Record: 50.19 — Kate Douglass, United States (2025)
  • World Junior Record: 51.45 — Kayla Sanchez, Canada (2018)
  • World Cup Record: 50.19 — Kate Douglass, United States (2025)
  • Triple Crown Contender: Kate Douglass (USA)

Top 8 Finishers

  1. Kate Douglass (USA) – 49.93 ** New World Record
  2. Mollie O’Callaghan (AUS) – 50.82
  3. Marrit Steenbergen (NED) – 51.10
  4. Taylor Ruck (CAN) – 51.69
  5. Kayla Sanchez (PHI) – 52.05
  6. Katarzyna Wasick (POL) – 52.25
  7. Brittany Castelluzzo (AUS) – 53.05
  8. Ingrid Wilm (CAN) – 53.37

Kate Douglass became the first woman to ever break the 50 second mark in the 100 freestyle posting a 49.93 in the event to win the overall World Cup standings as well. Douglass broke her own World Record of a 50.19 that she swam just last week at the World Cup stop in Westmont.

Split Comparison

Douglass-Toronto Douglass- Westmont Campbell- World Record Before Douglass G. Walsh-
50 23.93 23.88 24.21 23.9
100 26 26.31 26.04 26.41
Final 49.93 50.19 50.25 50.31

Douglass led the entire race and flipped 0.05 seconds off her record at the 50 mark. She had a huge 3rd 25 to flip under that record with just a 25 to go. She then earned the record at the touch to break the 50-second mark. Prior to last weekend, Cate Campbell of Australia held the World Record at a 50.25 that stood since 2017.

“I just wanted to better my swim from last weekend,” Douglass said after the race. She now is the overall World Cup standings winner, defending her title from a year ago. In the 100 free, she also earned a $10,000 triple crown bonus and another $10,000 for breaking the World Record.

It was the performance of the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup tour with first place in the women’s overall standings riding on the line. Rarely do you see such drama especially for the third to last event (second to last women’s event) of the entire tour.

I mean she did it twice in 100 free and that’s not easy

Can you imagine the training group, Alex, Gretchen and Kate all can do 55 low for the 100 scy breast with Kate probably now able to go 54 low? They are all great flyers and I bet even their backs are super fast. Now Kate is in another world in the 100 free. UV now has a new girl doing 21.1 50 scy free to add to the training group. Great swimmers combined with great Coaches.

Where are you getting these absurd 100 breast times 😭

Kate Douglas is the fastest ever sprint freestyler + breastroker combo.

Jessica Hardy was good in 50/100 breast and 50 free, but nowhere near Douglas in terms of range and best performances.

Also Hardy was tainted.

Harry also couldn’t do butterfly at a world class level like KD

Doesn’t she also have the 200 IM SCM WR as well?
She could have been a crown buster in that event as well.

Doubtful.

There is not enough time to recover from the W 100 FR.

Sally Foster (now Hunter) of Australia is a more similar comparison. Her best events were the 50 free & 200 breaststroke.

And that is why she is a great replacement to King

She is a much much better replacement than King.

King talked a lot who sometimes backfired (eg. “Americans will sweep all women’s events in Tokyo Olympics”)

Some people say a lot of things.

It’s better to let the performances do the talking.

Agreed.
King was loud and obnoxious, and didn’t always back it up.
Kate’s a true champion – lets her racing do the talking, and I don’t recall seeing her have a bad one in recent memory.

Yeah probably not in the last few years in the individual events before she retired this year but I remember King always back it up from 2016 to 19 and she was unstoppable during those years and always delivered when it comes to relays swim.

At least Lilly King delivered on the breaststroke leg of the women’s 4 x 100 meter medley relay (LCM, SCM) in calendar year 2024.

Are you saying that you prefer quiet women over those who are outspoken? I personally appreciate and respect King’s confidence and fire. Both athletes have performed at the top tier of swimming for many years. I’m glad to see different personalities in swimming – makes it more interesting for us spectators and better for the swimmers to be themselves rather than conform to others’ expectations.

That’s not the case whatsoever in sprint breaststroke:

Personal Best Times
W 100 BR (SCM)
King, L. – 1:02.50
Soni, R. – 1:02.70
Douglass, K. – 1:02.90

Furthermore, Lilly King was faster in the final of the W 100 BR (1:02.80) at the 2024 Short Course World Championships than Kate Douglass at any of the stops on the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup tour.

Except in the W 50 BR.

Furthermore, Kate Douglass has yet to break any World Records (LCM, SCM) in the W 100 BR. Kate Douglass still has plenty of work to do in the W 100 BR (LCM, SCM).
