Men’s Recap

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State defeated Oberlin, 199-34, and Findlay, 136-95 on Friday evening at the Busbey Natatorium. The Vikings had five individual wins and one relay victory.

WINNERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mahoney won both diving events on the evening scoring 278.35 in 1-meter and 307.40 in 3-meter.
  • Fick won the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 49.36, while teammate, Paddy Johnston, placed third with a time of 50.18.
  • Thomas (50.83) edged out teammate, Josh Merchbaker (51.89) in the 100-yard backstroke for the victory.
  • In the 500-yard freestyle, Niedzialek outlasted his opponents for the win, finishing with a time of 4:39.71. Connor Green (4:45.55) and Quinn DeGraaf claimed the third-and-fourth spots in the event.
  • The Vikings ended the evening with a first-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay with the team of Niedzialek, Kubacki, Green, and Tussing, clocking a 6:50.05.
  • Cleveland State started the swimming portion off with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay as Niedzialek, Manning, Johnston, Eberhardt clocked a 1:32.99.
  • In the first individual race of the evening, Jake Taulbee was the runner-up in the 1650-freestyle with a time of 16:32.04.
  • Cleveland State went second-and-third in the 200-yard freestyle with Nathen Eberhardt (1:40.98) and Spencer Tussing (1:41.04).
  • In the 50-yard freestyle sprint, the Green and White took second through fourth with Johnston (20.95), Thomas (21.17), and Merchbaker (21.24).
  • For the second straight race, the Vikings claimed the same finishing spots in the 400-yard IM with Kubacki (4:02.54), Reno James (4:05.79), and Jackson Nester (4:05.82).
  • It was another second through fourth finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with Krusinski (55.70), Manning (57.33), and Blake Fry (59.14)

Women’s Recap

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings went 1-1 on the evening, defeating Oberlin 169-67 and falling to Findlay, 138-100. Cleveland State won four individual events and one relay at the Busbey Natatorium on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lipnick started the individual races off with a victory in the 1650-yard freestyle, touching in 17:56.88.
  • In the 400-yard IM, Lewis was victorious, swimming a 4:35.36.
  • Taker (5:12.73) edged out teammate, Contich (5:13.19) to win the 500-yard freestyle.
  • Cleveland State ended the meet in style, finishing first-and-second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Contich, Sofia Sousa, Lewis, and Caroline Hughes won with a time of 7:54.59.
  • Reagan St. Clair brought home a pair of runner-up finishes on the evening; 200-yard freestyle (1:57.87) and 100-yard freestyle (53.89.)
  • Eichel (250.25) and Maggie Micko (199.45) claimed the second and third spots in 1-meter diving. In the 3-meter diving event, Eichel (241.40) took first and Micko (220.95) was the runner-up.

Cleveland, OH – The University of Findlay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 5 for a tri-meet with Division I Cleveland State and Division III Oberlin College. Findlay’s women defeated Cleveland State 138-100 and also took down Oberlin 188-50. The Oilers men split their day, defeating Oberlin 159-42 but falling to the Vikings 136-95.

Women

Findlay got its day started on a good note, earning first and second place in the 200-yard medley relay. The Oilers team of freshman Sasha Melnyk, senior Kristina Coleman, freshman Sydney Jones, and freshman Macy May took top spot with a time of 1:45.46. May’s final 50 of 23.79 seconds was the fastest of all competitors in the race. Findlay’s team of freshman Mille Berg, junior Rachel Poling, freshman Sydney Jones, and sophomore Gracie Glaser was the runner-up with a 1:48.88.

May’s day was just beginning as she picked up two more wins in the sprint events. The Oilers’ freshman won the 50 free with a 24.57 and later won the 100 free with a 53.13. Joining May in the 50 free were Sydney Jones and Sasha Melnyk who took second and third, respectively, with times of 24.64 and 24.70.

Berg later swam in the 100 backstroke, winning the event with a 57.71. Melnyk was the runner-up with a 58.58.

Kristina Coleman was the winner on the 100 breaststroke, taking top spot with a 1:06.66 while teammate Rachel Poling was the runner-up with a 1:08.18.

In the 100 butterfly, Findlay took the top three spots freshman Edith Somrah (58.80), Sydney Jones (1:00.15), and sophomore Jessie Schelin (1:01.05) all out touched competitors from either of the two other schools.

In the 200 free, sophomore Cecilia Langle put together four sub-30 second laps to touch the wall in a time of 1:56.87, taking first place. Freshman Abbie Kmet took third with a 2:01.27. Langle also took third in the 100 free (55.04) and third in the 800 free (8:10.75)

Freshman Jenna Daria swam an 18:57.25 in the 1650-yard freestyle and finished runner-up to a swimmer from Cleveland State, but earning the win over Oberlin College by almost a full minute.

Findlay picked up a win in the 1-meter diving competition as freshman Addi Fleischman won the event with a score of 262.50.

Men

The Oilers’ men kicked off the afternoon with a great performance in the 200-medley relay. Junior Tim Stollings, sophomore Daniel Garcia, freshman Camilo Marrugo Montano, and sophomore Dags Bregis teamed up to win the event with a 1:29.07, the second-fastest time in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) history. Marrugo Montano later won the 50 free with a 20.88 and the 100 free with a 45.94. Garcia won the 400 IM with a 3:57.67, the fourth-best time in conference history and an NCAA ‘B’ standard. Garcia continued his good day with a win in the 100 breaststroke with a 55.33, the third fastest time in the history of the conference and another NCAA ‘B’ standard.

Findlay got a win from freshman Rafael Lozano Machado in the 1650 freestyle, taking first with a time of 16:16.69, the fourth-best time in G-MAC history. Machado also took second to Cleveland State in the 500-yard freestyle, but defeated Oberlin in the event. His time was 4:43.60.

Sophomore Adam Hornak was the first to touch the wall in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.70), setting the sixth-best time in conference history and missing the ‘B’ standard by just four-tenths of a second.

Stollings was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly, finishing second to Cleveland State, but earning first against Oberlin. He had a time of 49.58.

The Oilers are back in the pool tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 6 in a dual against the University of Indianapolis.

Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College swimming and diving team made the short trek to Cleveland State University for a double dual against the host Vikings and Division II Findlay on Friday night.

The Yeowomen fell to the Oilers 188-50 and to Cleveland State 169-67. The Yeomen ended on the wrong end of a 159-42 count against Findlay and fell 199-34 against CSU.

In the first individual event of the night Rachel Maxwell and Charlotte Hantus placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,650-yard free. Maxwell completed the journey in 19:53.34 with Hantus close behind at 19:57.34.

Hannah Hale continued to impress, posting a mark of 2:02.95 in the 200-yard free to place fifth and later returned to grab a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard free in 55.99.

In the 50-yard free Elisabeth Ragone and Ellie Frost each finished ahead of the top CSU swimmer as Ragone was fourth overall in 25.20 while Frost placed fifth in 25.36.

First-year Bella Sites turned in a pair of strong swims in the 400-yard IM and 500-yard free. In the shorter of the two races she placed sixth in 4:57.21 and she was fifth in the 500 at 5:25.92.

Isaac Viviano guided the men’s team effort, turning in a fifth-place showing in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:58.64. He would later add a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard breast with a mark of 1:01.99.

First-year Dylan Bechtold and sophomore Sam Blau also impressed in the mile as Bechtold was third in 17:35.11 with Blau coming in fourth in 19:33.05.

The YeoSwimmers have a short turnaround as they are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Ashland University.
