FINA To Establish “Junior World Records” in Swimming for 14-17 Girls, 15-18 Boys

At their bureau meeting in Cancun, Mexico this week, FINA voted to establish FINA Swimming World Junior Records for boys aged 15-18 and girls aged 14-17.

But you won’t see many of the heroes of the past on this list; that’s because, like all of the recently added FINA World Records, they won’t look backwards for records, they will only proceed forward.

To be established as a World Record, a swim will have to clear the World Junior Championship Record after last year’s FINA Junior World Championships (which are listed below). They gave no indication that those would be considered Junior World Records at any time, rather that the records would remain blank until those times were cleared.

Most of these records were set at the 2013 edition of the event in Dubai, UAE.

The current Junior World Championship Records are as follows:

These records don’t mean much if they aren’t including swimmers from the past at these same events. The relays are probably not accurate either.

Why the lower limit on the age ranges? What does that serve?

Also, I saw a couple commenters saying that FINA couldn’t backdate records because it would be a long time before anyone touched phelps/ledecky/Thorpe etc. personally I think it’s a good thing when some records aren’t broken every 2-3 years.

Do they only count certain meets? (Like only Junior Worlds or Junior Pan Pacs) or does any ordinary meet count? It’ll l be hard for them to keep track of if any ordinary meet counts, won’t it? For example, Ledecky is still in that 14-17 range so wouldn’t her times count? Would her normal world records also be junior world records? Also, Michael Andrew must be so excited about these new “world NAGs” to chase. Good addition by FINA. Could take things to the next level in jr swimming.

It is tough to say World Nag when the real world NAG are not there.. ( and are times everybody who likes swimming knows)

Even Horton having a lot of “World Nag Record” everytime he looks at Australian all time age he will see Thorpe…

If you look at past history, when an event was added to the world record level, FINA has never back tracked. For instance, when the 50 meter freestyle as added to World Record status circa 1980, previous times were not considered. The record had a start date and proceeded from that point.

IIRC, you used to have to go faster than what was the known fastest time (ie. world best) at the official establishment of an event as a world record event in order to become the first world record holder in the event. Look at some of the stroke 50s

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_50_metres_backstroke

Jeff Rouse is the first WR holder in the 50 back (LC in 1993; SC in 1995)

Women’s side there is no world record until Sandra Volker several years later (LC 1997; SC 1998)

In 50 fly, the years of first world record are Denis Pankratov (LC 1996) Mark Foster (SC 1995) Inge de Bruijn (LC 1999) and Amy Van Dyken (SC… Read more »

But why did Fina did not consider ALL championships?

They have Daniel Bell dating back from 2008.. but they ignored Mcevoy Ledecky Missy and Ye… Even Ruta 100 breast is not her WR

That is what puzzles me as well.

It’s as if those swimmers swam those times in some small club or regional meets, McEvoy, Missy, Ledecky, Ye, Ruta swam those times in Olympic, Worlds, or National/Trials championships. They are all FINA-sanctioned FFS!

I can understand doping control being a concern and you aren’t going to necessarily have that done for a junior who finished second or third in a race in a brilliant time at the Queensland State Championships or North Baltimore Christmas Meet. But they definitely should put it on the list if it’s an Olympics/WCs and the swimmer did have a negative drug test afterwards, which would be most of the people we’re talking about.

It seems FINA is looking back, but only to previous Junior World Championships – some of the girls’ records are from 2008 and 2011. Maybe this is fair, because not all times are submitted to FINA by home nations, although I suspect that submission criteria will now change.

Currently, I think a swim must be sent to FINA if it attracts 750 FINA points or more, although nations may submit swims with slower points.

Whilst it is inconceivable that any swim qualifying even for a junior record would not attract the minimum submission points, unless there is a cut off point/criteria (as applied by FINA) there could be considerable difficulties in compiling progressive records which would be the only… Read more »

I think they should be talking about points.. but at the age they defined.. what is the fastest time for a swimmer? Then we would probably have Thorpe Phelps Mcevoy Ye Missy Ledecky

Ah, thanks, that clarifies things and it seems even fairer this way…

it’s not fairer, because it does not recognize faster registered swims in FINA sanctioned meets.

Cate Campbell’s junior times would destroy any of 50/100 free listed and would stay in the records list for decades to come.
She swam 24.9 as 14 yo (in textile)
She swam 24.17 (just turning 16 yo) and 53.30 (as 15 yo, beating Coughlin at Santa Clara)

Or how about Tracy Wickham’s 4:06.28 she swam when she was 15 yo from 1978?
