YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A program record by freshman Delaney Duncan(Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and wins by each of the three seniors lifted the Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team to a 184.5-107.5 senior day win over Bowling Green State University, Friday, Jan. 29, in Jones Natatorium. The Eagles won every event on the day to take down the Falcons in their final Mid-American Conference dual of the season.

A strong start by the Green and White began with a one-two showing the 200 Medley Relay, giving the Eagles an early edge that they would not relinquish. Junior Alexis Mitcheltree(Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) teamed up with Duncan, freshman Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), and senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) for a first place finish while freshman Erika Guenther, junior Genna Worthley(Portland, Maine-Deering), freshman Dora Vrcic, and junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) claimed second.

From there, freshman Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) turned in a season-best time of 17:04.28 to take the top spot in the 1650 Freestyle. Sophomore Sarah Dombkowski(Canton, Mich.-Canton) finished second, posting her third consecutive top-two finish in the event.

The 200 Freestyle came down to two swimmers fighting for the top spot as senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) touched out junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) to win the event.

EMU’s trend carried over into the 100 Backstroke where Mitcheltree paced the field on her way to a victory. Liberman bested Bowling Green’s Maya Skorupski for second place, clocking in three-hundredths of a second ahead of her Falcon counterpart and teammate Guenther who tied for third.

A program record by Duncan and a second place finish by Worthley gave the Eagles their fifth consecutive one-two punch in the 100 Breast. Duncan bested last weekend’s record-tying performance by more than a second to claim the win and etch her name into the record books.

While the Eagles streak of top-two finishes came to a close in the 200 Butterfly, the Green and White still earned two of the top-three spots as senior Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.)earned the win with a career-best time of 2:03.65. Daniel outlasted Bowling Green’s Jordan Bullock en route to her first win of the season while junior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) rounded out the top three.

A win by MacLean in the 50 Free and a third place finish by junior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) came just ahead of the first break of the meet. With MacLean’s win, each of the three EMU seniors registered just seven events into the competition.

Turning the attention to the diving portion of the meet, the Eagles benefitted from a pair of great performances by sophomores Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) and Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser). In the 1-meter, Shereda took home first place with a career-best score of 291.61. Deacon gave the Green and White another win, claiming the 3-meter with a score of 307.20.

In the return to the pool, MacLean clocked in victorious in the 100 Free. With the meet in-hand, the Eagles went on to claim wins in the 200 Back, 200 Breast, 500 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 Individually Medley before closing out the meet with another relay win in the 400 Free.

Mitcheltree won the 200 Back, completing her sweep of the events while Duncan followed up her record-breaking race with another victory in the 200 Breast, touching in with a season-best time of 2:16.95. Duncan’s first place time was nearly five seconds quicker than her previous best and ranks fourth in program laurels. Van Allen (500 Free) and Jackson (100 Fly) added wins to their day before Daniel closed out individual events with a win in the 200 Individual Medley.

Eastern closes out regular-season competition, Feb. 12-13, at the Ohio State Invitational before taking part in the Mid-American Conference Championships at the end of the month.

Bowling Green State:

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich. and Jones Natatorium to square off with the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Friday afternoon. The Eagles, who finished just one place ahead of the Falcons in last season’s MAC Championships, were fresh off a win over defending MAC Champion Akron last week and celebrating Senior Night on Friday night. The momentum that EMU carried was too much for BGSU to overcome, falling at the hands of the Eagles 184.5-107.5.

“Tonight was a tough meet for us as a team, but I am proud of our divers and the progress they showed in the meet,” head coach Matt Ense said. “Freshman Claire Stam hit an NCAA Zone Cut in the 1 meter dive, while senior Rachel Perry scored season highs in both diving events. As a team, though, we need to regroup before next Friday’s home meet where we will celebrate our Senior Night at Cooper Pool.”

Freshman Claire Stam, after setting a school record in the 3-meter dive a week ago, scored a 279.00 in the 1-meter dive to register an NCAA Zone Cut in the event. She was joined in strong performances off the boards by senior Rachel Perry, who scored season highs in the 3-meter (232.88) and 1-meter (227.71) dives. Freshman Ashley White scored a season-best in the 1-meter dive, with a mark of 241.20.

Although the Falcons struggled to get results in the pool against the Eagles on Friday, the Falcons did turn in several quality swims. In the 200 IM, Daniela Carrillo finished second with a mark of 2:09.43 – her second best swim of the season in the event. Despite not winning the 200 IM, the Falcons claimed the next five spots, finishing second through sixth in the event. In the 100 fly, Jordan Bullock finished second (57.06) as the Orange and Brown claimed spots two through five in the race. The Falcons also turned in second-place finishes in the 50 free (Victoria Griffin, 23.83), 100 free (Kayla Effinger, 52.80), 200 fly (Bullock, 2:03.85), 200 breast (Carrillo, 2:17.90), 200 back (Maya Skorupski, 2:07.54) and 500 free (Alex Poitinger, 5:10.88).

BGSU will be back in action a week from tonight, as they host Youngstown State and Oakland in a tri-meet at Cooper Pool. The meet will serve as Senior Night for eight Falcons and will be broadcast on ESPN3 beginning at 5:00 pm.
