Eastern Michigan Men Take Down Miamo (OH) 184-109

The Eastern Michigan men traveled to Oxford for a dual meet against Miami Ohio for a dual meet this weekend, bringing home a 184-109 win. Full results can be found here. Read on for full recaps from each team.

Eastern Michigan:

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team pushed its Mid-American Conference dual win streak to 70, Saturday, Feb. 6, with a 184-109 win over Miami University at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Four different Eagles registered two wins in Eastern’s victory.

EMU opened the day with a one-two finish in the 200 Medley Relay before junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) reeled in his second win of the season in the 100 Freestyle. Touching in with a time of 9:35.47, Lichtenberg was followed by juniors Marcin Rzyski(Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) and Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers). Rzyski claimed second while Cutter’s season-best time gave him the third place finish and the Green and White the sweep.

Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) then won the 200 Free, besting the field by nearly two seconds. Freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) touched in second, with a season-best time of 1:41.11.

The Eagles turned in another one-two punch in the 100 Backstroke, led by junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson). Winning the event for the fourth time this season, and third consecutive race, Bateman clocked in in 49.60. Just behind Bateman was freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary), who edged out Miami’s Jake Prodoehl for the runner-up finish.

After junior Kyle Aerne‘s (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes) season-best time of 56.21 gave him the win in the 100 Breaststroke and senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) finished second, sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) turned in his fastest race of the season in the 200 Butterfly to add another win to the Eagles’ total.

Miami recorded its first win of the day in the 50 Free while senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) and junior Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park)finished second and third, respectively, before the teams turned attention to the springboard where freshman Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-) led the way, placing second in the 1-meter event with a career-best 324.53.

Eastern returned to the top in the 100 Free where Henry and Tyson finished first and second, respectively, before the Eagles repeated their backstroke success in the 200. Bateman reeled in his second win of the day while Kawaguchi claimed second.

Aerne’s season-best 2:04.08 in the 200 Breast highlighted another win for the Green and White while redshirt freshman Lance Bergmann‘s (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community)season-best time gave him his first first top-three finish this season.

The Eagles swept the 500 Free in the next event with Lichtenberg leading the way. Touching in with his season’s fastest time, Lichtenberg won the event for the first time this season. Rzyski and freshman Jean-Francois Murphy rounded out the top three, finishing second and third, respectively.

Following a one-two punch in the 100 Fly by Gissen and Burton, the Green and White closed out the day with a  win of the 400 Free Relay.

Eastern closes out the regular season next weekend, Feb. 13-14, at the Ohio State Invitational. A select contigent of Eagles will trek to the Buckeye State for the two-day invite.

Miami (OH):

OXFORD, Ohio – In their last home meet of the season, Miami University’s men’s swimming and diving team took on defending MAC Champions Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks fell to the Eagles, 184-109 on Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Nixon Aquatic Center.

Seven seniors – Evan Bader, Christopher Dieter, Cole Fryman, Michael Nash, Sean Neri, Jacob Prodoehl and Davis Staley – were honored with Senior Day Ceremonies before the final home-meet for the RedHawks.

Junior Lucas Brock turned in a win for the RedHawks in the 50-yard freestyle after he clocked a season-best time of 20.85, edging out the Eastern Michigan competition by over half a second. Fryman took first in the one-meter diving competition, tallying an impressive 344.37. Nash was the next nearest RedHawk in third place.

Miami had two top-finishes in the 200-yard butterfly with sophomore Ross Rybakowicz in second (1:53.78) and freshman Robert Newman in third (1.54.08), respectively. Bader had a solid showing in the 200-yard breaststroke, securing second place with his time of 2:06.86.

To wrap up the last home meet of the season, the RedHawks took to the water for the 400-yard freestyle relay. Miami finished second place thanks to the efforts of junior Jack Strauss, Brock, Prodoehl and Dieter, clocking a combined time of 3:06.4.

The RedHawks divide and conquer next weekend when a portion of the team will attend the Ohio State Invitational, Feb. 12-13, in Columbus, Ohio while another portion of the squad will travel to Muncie, Ind. to compete against Ball State.
