CHARLESTON, Ill. – After a grueling week of training, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming teams still had enough in the tank to put up dominant efforts against Eastern Illinois on Saturday (Oct. 17), easily outdistancing the Panthers in a dual meet. Head CoachMatt Bos‘ men’s team coasted to a 138-65 win while the women’s squad posted a 142-60 victory.

“I was really pleased with the energy we had today,” Bos said. “EIU is not an easy place to swim, especially in mid-October. We saw some huge improvements from last week and I expect us to keep getting better and better with racing as the fall continues.”

Thirteen different individuals – seven women and six men – earned events wins on Saturday for the Jaguars. Freshman Allison Cicero collected wins in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, although Bos credited freshman Jordyn Harrison‘s win in the 1,000 with setting the tone for the day.

“We have a good combination of upperclassmen and freshman contributing,” Bos said. “Jordyn Harrison got us started with a nice 1000 free and we were able to build momentum throughout the meet.”

Harrison clocked a time of 10:51.20, beating teammate Vanessa Roop to the wall by five seconds. Cicero touched the wall first in the 200 IM at 2:11.96 and the 500 free at 5:15.67, easily outdistancing the field. Junior Maranda Buha also had a strong day, winning the 100 fly while contributing to wins in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

The men got going with strong swims from Benjamin Levart and David Sweezer in the 1000 free, both going under the previous school record. Levart touched at 9:36.00 and Sweezer closed at 9:39.65, both eclipsing Rich Sunkel‘s previous mark of 9:43.

“It was nice to see two freshman get under out school record in the 1000,” Bos said. “It will be fun to watch those guys race each other over the next four years.”

Sunkel had a good day in his own right, winning the 500 free at 4:45.32.

Jonathan Stoller and Trenton Wolfe both earned a pair of wins with Stoller claiming the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke races and Wolfe winning the 100 and 200 free events.

Meanwhile, IUPUI sent its divers north to compete in the Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue University at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Freshman Krisztian Somhegyihighlighted the five men’s entries, placing third overall off both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Somhegyi notched a score of 317.15 off the 3-meter board, trailing only a pair of Purdue divers. The same held true off the 1-meter board where he finished his six dives at 293.65. Fellow freshman Mitchell Matsey was fourth off both boards while Josh Carmichaelwas sixth in both.

Bailey Wills led IUPUI’s two female entrants, placing fifth off the 3-meter board and sixth off the 1-meter board. She finished with 237.05 points off the 3-meter and 236.95 off the 1-meter. Melissa Berger was seventh off the 3-meter and eighth off the 1-meter.

IUPUI will be back in the water on Oct. 30 when they swim against the University of Cincinnati at Keating Aquatics Center at 5:00 p.m..
