Columbia Women Bounce Back With Home Win Over Cornell

NEW YORK — The Columbia women’s swimming and diving team picked up its first victory of 2024 on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cornell Big Red, 182-118, at Uris Natatorium.

“Coming off a tough dual meet up in Providence, the team bounced back in style at home today,” Head Coach Diana Caskey said. “So many gutsy fast swims and such great team energy.  It was an awesome end to a busy week!”

The Lions dominated right out of the gate in today’s meet. In the first individual event of the afternoon, Aziza Ganihanova picked up the Lions first victory, taking first place in the 400-IM with a time of 4:21.40. Ganihanova would go on to win the 200-breast as well with a time of 1:59.40.

Just a couple events later, it was Emily Wang earning a big win for Columbia in the 100-back, touching the wall with a time of 55.31. Wang also won the 200-IM later in the afternoon with a time of 2:04.70.

Ashley Hu followed up her win in the 100-breast at Brown yesterday with a sweep in the breaststroke events today. She won both the 100-breast and 200-breast, with times of 1:02.02 and 2:16.26, respectively.

Allison Martin had a solid afternoon, taking first in the 200-fly with a time of 1:59.52.

Mia Avansino was the last Lion to win an event, taking first in the 500-free with a time of 4:54.57.

For the divers, Alice Diakova had a perfect afternoon. She won both the 3m and 1m competitions, with scores of 307.95 and 268.43, respectively. Macy Pine finished right behind her, claiming second place on both boards. Pince collected a score of 283.50 in the 3m and 253.05 in the 1m. Chloe Leung took fourth on the 1m boards.

“Really strong showing from Macy and Alice today,” Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. “I couldn’t be happier with how the team is performing right now!”

The Lions will hit the road once again next weekend, traveling to take on the Princeton Tigers on Friday, January 19. The meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. in New Jersey.

NEW YORK — The Cornell women’s swimming and diving team earned six event victories but ultimately fell 182-118 to the Columbia Lions on Sunday from the Percy Uris Natatorium in its first dual of the 2024 season. The Big Red also secured a podium finish in 12 of the 16 events held.

The red and white opened Sunday’s action with a bang in its first Ivy League since Nov. 18 against Penn and Princeton, as Ming XuAmy WuEmilie Boisrenoult, and Priscilla Wongso took the top spot in the 200-Medley Relay, touching the wall at 1:41.80. That was not the only relay that the Big Red secured on the afternoon, as the quartet of Anna Gruvberger, Boiserenoult, Kate Li, and Wongso grabbed gold in the 200-Freestyle with a time of 1:33.45. The team also earned points in the relay from Chloe Addiego, Xu, Tori Zhang, and Joelle Ohr, who secured bronze after finishing almost two seconds behind.

On the individual side, Cornell earned four other victories, with three coming in the freestyle portion of the meet. Senior Priscilla Wongso continued to impress in her final season for the Big Red, taking home the 50-Freestyle for the second time this season with a time of 23.17, almost half a second faster than second-place finisher Sally Ma of Columbia. Wongso also earned gold in the 100-Freestyle (50.48) as part of a 1-2 finish for the visitors in the event, as she and teammate Boisrenoult (51.26) were separated by 0.78 seconds in their final times. The Big Red’s final freestyle win on the afternoon came from sophomore Jungmin Yoon, as the La Crescenta, Calif. native came from behind over the last 50 yards to pass Columbia’s Anna Eyre to secure the 200-Freestyle title with a 1:50.23.

Cornell’s final win on the day came from Anna Gruvberger, as the senior nabbed the 100-Butterfly with a time of 54.50. It was also the last 1-2 finish on the day for the Big Red, as Boisrenoult earned silver, touching the wall 0.51 seconds after her senior counterpart.

Other top finishers in Cornell’s first meet of the new year were a second and third-place showing from Katherine Yee (2:04.70) and Marie Williams (2:08.06) in the 200-IM and bronze medals for Brooke Andrews in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving events.

With Sunday’s results against the Lions, Cornell has lost seven consecutive head-to-head battles with its Ivy League foe, as its last win came in Ithaca on Jan. 14, 2017, via a 162.5 – 137.5 decision.

UP NEXT

Cornell will head north to Connecticut for its final Ivy League road meet of the regular season when it battles Yale from Kiphuth Exhibition Pool. Diving will be tomorrow (Jan. 15) at 3 p.m., with the swimming portion of the meet to follow on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. Both portions of the meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
