Cleveland State and Oakland Take 2021 Horizon League Diving Top Spots

INDIANAPOLIS — Opening day of the 2021 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships concluded Monday afternoon at the IU Natatorium (NAT), with Cleveland State’s Matthew Akers winning the men’s 1-meter diving event and Oakland’s Bernadette Turchi taking the women’s 3-meter diving title.

The first day of championship diving events saw Matthew Akers claim the 2021 #HLSD men’s 1-meter trophy with a final score of 321.20 for the Vikings. Runner-up was a 302.95 performance from Milwaukee’s Jared Kleczka, while the final podium position was earned by Felix LaFortune of UIC with a score of 296.45.

Oakland’s Bernadette Turchi earned the 2021 #HLSD women’s 3-meter championship title after a 267.70 performance. Abigail Hellinga was the event runner-up for UIC, scoring 260.20. Mckenzie Sanchez of Milwaukee was the third place finisher with a 248.60.

The 2021 #HLSD diving competition will conclude on Tuesday with the Men’s 3-meter and the Women’s 1-meter finals. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. ET and final competition will start at 2 p.m. ET. Both sections will be streamed on ESPN3. Visit our #HLSD Championship Central for more.
