CCSU Blue Devils Top Sacred Heart In Nutmeg Classic On Friday, Pioneers’ Senior Day Saturday

The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team opened its two-day dual meet with Sacred Heart University Friday night. The Blue Devils won eight of the opening night events, highlighted by a sweep in the 200 freestyle and wins in both relays 

The two squads finish the meet on Saturday in Milford at McCann Natatorium. 

CCSU – SHU TWO-DAY DUAL | RESULTS 

Score: CCSU 112, SHU 74

RELAYS 

  • Grace M. Young (24.58) pulled the Blue Devils in front on the third leg of the 200-freestyle relay, and Addison Kenney (24.16) extended the lead on the final leg as the Blue Devils captured first place in a time of 1:39.38. Megan Dunnigan led off the relay at 25.38 and Gabby Spaciano split 25.26 on the second leg 

DIVING 

  • Jewelle Maziarz finished third in a strong 3-meter field, tallying 278.33 points 

STROKES 

  • Kenney won the 100 back, taking over on the second 50 and winning in a time of 58.82, while Fusco finished fourth in 1:01.14 
  • Grace Young led from start to finish to take the top spot in the 100-breaststroke, with a swim of 1:07.42 while Okurowski placed fourth at 1:10.56 

  • Dunnigan swam to first place in the 200 IM with a start-to-finish victory, in a time of 2:09.52 and Kenney was third with a swim of 2:14.86 

  • Milhomens as second in the 200-butterfly, swimming 2:10.68, while Behrle surged on the final 50 to place fourth at 2:15.07 

FREESTYLE 

  • The Blue Devils swept the top three spots in the 200-freestyle, led by Gabby Spaciano who closed in 29.63 to take the top spot. 
  • Grace M. Young gave Central the top spot in the 50-freestyle, clocking 25.15 with Suchowiecki claiming fourth place at 25.84 

  • Milhomens finished second in the 200-freestyle, going 1:56.68 and Rutledge was third in 1:58.79

The Blue Devils took the top spot in four events on Saturday, giving them a dozen victories in the two-day meet.

DIVING 

  • Jewelle Maziarz scored 260.93 on the 10meter board to place third for the Blue Devils 

STROKES 

  • Milhomens led a 1-2 sweep of the 200backstroke, going 2:06.64, with Fusco finishing second at 2:11.74 

  • Grace Young won the final individual event of the meet, going 2:26.43 in the 200 breaststroke, with Okurowski in third with a time of 2:33.03 

  • Dunningan swam to a second-place finish in the 100-butterfly, with a 59.50 effort 

  • Loretta Santora gave the Blue Devils the third spot in the 400 IM, touching in a time of 4:49.09 

FREESTYLE 

  • Grace M. Young was the runner-up in the 100-freestyle, finishing at 54.25, while Spaciano touched in fourth place in 55.00 
  • Rutledge led the Blue Devils to the top three places, and top-four times, in the 500-freestyle, with a swim of 5:15.87. Spaciano placed second at 5:19.15, Kretkowski was third at 5:22.32 and Lord posted the fourth fastest time at 5:25.56.  

NEXT UP 

  • The Blue Devils are in action next Saturday when they close the dual meet portion of their season at URI. That meet is set to begin at 1:00 pm.

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. — The Sacred Heart University women’s swimming and diving team returned to the pool for the first time in the new year on Friday, competing in Day 1 of the 12th Annual Nutmeg Classic against in-state foe Central Connecticut State University at Suydam Natatorium. Through the opening day of competition, the Pioneers trail the Blue Devils by a score of 112–74.

First-year Ryleigh Mahoney continued her historic debut season by breaking the program record on the 3-meter board, posting a score of 318.60. Sophomore Sinclair Yadao followed closely behind with a second-place finish, scoring 285.00. With their performances, both divers qualified for NCAA Zones.

In the pool, Sacred Heart earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Emma DavisEmma HaasKristen Baker, and Brooke LaBarge combined for a time of 1:41.07. Maddie Goret added a runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 59.28.

Sophia Velleco highlighted the night with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 2:06.79.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday for Day 2 of the Nutmeg Classic at McCann Natatorium, which will also serve as Senior Day. Senior Day ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.

MILFORD, CONN. — The Sacred Heart University women’s swimming and diving team honored its four senior student-athletes — Emma DavisCharlotte KadusonDaniella Palamaro, and Leila Sofiane — on Saturday afternoon before falling to Central Connecticut State, 190–163.

Sacred Heart opened the meet on a high note, capturing first place in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Kristen BakerMaggie HollandEmma Haas, and Emma Davis touched the wall in 1:50.47 to set the tone early. Maddie Goret followed with a strong performance in the 400-yard individual medley, earning first place with a time of 4:42.63.

Sophia Velleco continued her standout day by winning the 100-yard freestyle in 53.31, later adding another first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.41. On the diving boards, first-year Ryleigh Mahoney claimed the top spot in the 1-meter event with a score of 272.85, while Sinclair Yadao secured second place, posting a 268.05.

Additional podium finishes for the Pioneers included Goret’s second-place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.60) and a runner-up finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay by Holland, Haas, Davis, and Velleco, who combined for a time of 3:39.74.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday at 3 p.m., traveling to Bridgeport for a tri-meet against Fairfield University and the University of Bridgeport.
