Swimming Canada has named a roster of seven swimmers who will compete in Para events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. They join the previously-announced roster of ten Olympic program swimmers to make a small roster for the quadrennial event.
Like the Olympic pathway team, the Paralympic pathway team is lacking many of the big stars. Only two of their 13 medals from the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games will be represented this summer in Glasgow.
Reid Maxwell, the Paralympic silver medalist in the S8 400 free, and Katie Cosgriffe, the Paralympic silver medalist in the S10 100 fly, will race for Canada at the meet this summer.
Para-swimming is integrated into the swimming program with Oly-swimming at the Commonwealth Games, albeit with a fairly limited schedule. In 2022, Canada won four medals in para-swimming events, including gold from Nicolas-Guy Turbide in the 50 free (S13) and from Nicholas Bennett in the 200 free (S14).
Canada seems to have de-emphasized the rocky 2026 Commonwealth Games this year for swimming, which should further extend Australia’s dominance of the event.
The country’s top Olympic track swimmers will mostly focus on the Pan Pac Championships, while Para-track athletes will have the Para Pan Pac Championships at the end of August in California to swim for.
Swimming at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will run from July 24-29.
