Butterfly and IMer Emily Campbell Stays In-State with Verbal to East Carolina

Emily Campbell from Raleigh, North Carolina has announced her commitment to swim and study at East Carolina University beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

Campbell swims for Marlins of Raleigh. She had a very successful March. At the beginning of March, she achieved numerous best times while at the TAC ESSZ SC Sectional. Her best times included the 100 freestyle (53.16), 100 (57.34) and 200 (2:03.04) butterfly, and 400 IM (4:28.79). At the end of March, she achieved more best times at the TAC Tar Heel States. These best times included the 200 freestyle (1:52.69), 200 backstroke (2:05.04), 100 (1:10.35) and 200 (2:28.40) breaststrokes, and 200 IM (2:05.83). 

This summer, she competed at the NC ESSZ LC Sectionals in the beginning of July. There she achieved best times in the 50 (27.91), 100 (59.75), and 200 (2:09.41) freestyles and the 200 backstroke (2:32.34). At the end of July, she competed at the Futures Championships in Huntsville. There she achieved best times in the long course 100 butterfly (1:04.48), 200 butterfly (2:20.42), and 400 IM (5:18.66). She also finished 30th in the 200 butterfly. 

Campbell will begin her begin her senior year this fall at JO Sanderson High School. Her best short course times are:

  • 100 butterfly: 57.34
  • 200 butterfly: 2:03.04
  • 200 IM: 2:05.83
  • 400 IM: 4:28.79
  • 200 backstroke: 2:05.04

East Carolina University is a Division I school located in Greenville, NC. In May 2020, ECU announced that they would cut both men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. By October 2020, SwimSwam reported that over half of the 2019-2020 roster had already announced their transfers, but by January 2021 the women’s team was reinstated. The men’s team has not yet been reinstated. 

Neither team competed during the 2020-2021 season, but at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships, the women’s team finished fourth out of six teams. Based on her best times, Campbell is just off of scoring in numerous events. It took a time of 56.51 in the 100 butterfly, 2:02.81 in the 200 butterfly, 2:04.44 in the 200 IM, 4:27.55 in the 400 IM to make it back.

Campbell will arrive on campus next fall as a member of the class of 2026.
