Bobby Finke on 1500 Win: “We had half the Olympic final there”

2026 PRO SWIM SERIES – AUSTIN

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

2x 1500 Free Olympic champion and World Record-Holder Bobby Finke won his signature event at the Pro Swim Series in Austin. In a field that included half the 2024 Olympic final (Finke, Dan Wiffen, Damiel Joly, David Aubry), Finke came out on top, touching in 15:01, one of the fastest non-rested times of his career. After the race, Finke gave insight into what holiday training at Florida looked like and how double world champion Ahmed Jaouadi has fit into the distance training group.

If Bobby says they didn’t really rest for this meet, that means that Katie isn’t really rested either. I remember going to a World Clinic where Bruce Gemmell said that Katie would do a 2 day rest and go best times. I wonder if Nesty gave Katie a few easier practices just to let her recover a tiny bit just to see where they are at… must be rough to go nearly a best time/world record. It also must be rough that in order to go a best time, you need to break a world record.

I wonder…on these 10k sessions – are they also doing a second session that day? What might the second session be?

I had no idea that 10k sessions was a thing for these people.

Assuming short rests between everything, aren’t you in the water for 2:30+ in a 10km session?

OldCoach

No. If the whole thing is done at 1:20 intervals, you’re in the water for about 2 hours 15 minutes

But warmup? Drills? Cooldown?

Blackflag82

Not uncommon for big distance days to have a “warmup” be a slightly less intense start of the set, drills are absent, and cooldown is a little at the end still near pace. Big aerobic sets have different needs than anaerobic sets/workouts.

Not everyone is Michael Andrew, Schuberts Mission Viejo’s animal lane still KING.

What does this mean, even?

Texan

How many people are doing 2x a day five days a week. Don’t a lot of clubs take at least a morning off? I would imagine a morning session the next day to be a bit of a recovery set. Maybe do some stroke work.

I know a lot has changed since I swam, but in the late 90s at Bolles (with Nesty as one of the coaches) double sessions of 10k+ per session for the distance group was not uncommon during Christmas training.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
