BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women’s swimming team closed the first semester portion of its 2025-26 schedule by hosting Loyola Maryland and Howard in the Johns Hopkins Open on Friday (Dec. 5) and Saturday (Dec. 6).  The Blue Jays grabbed 12 first-place finishes in the non-team-scored meet.

BALTIMORE (December 6, 2025) – Howard University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams closed out 2025 at the JHU Invitational, hosted by John Hopkins in Baltimore.

On the women’s side, senior Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) and junior Chanice Posada (Houston) led the way with record-setting performances. Nwaeze won the 100 Free with a new facility benchmark of 51.03 while the Houston native claimed gold in the 100 Fly (55.91), which is also a new facility record. The Maryland product and senior Samyra Benoit (Santa Clarita) also competed in the 100 Fly, finishing second (56.47) and third (57.32), respectively.

Other noteworthy performance included freshman Brooke Whitt (Chicago) winning the 100 Breast, clocking in at 1:06.21.

For the men, senior Taj Benton (Baltimore) led the charge with a third-place finish in the 100 Free (46.78).

The Baltimore native and rookie Kaleb James (Durham, N.C.) took part in the 100 Fly, producing times of 49.90 (fourth place) and 50.74 (fifth place), respectively.

Senior Ty Triche (Humble, Texas) found success in the 100 Back, earning fourth place (54.97).

Third-year Bison Ameer Bashir (Hartley, Del.) competed in the 200 Back where he landed fourth overall (1:59.16).

On Jan. 14, HU returns to action versus Towson inside Burr Gym Pool.

A contingent of Greyhounds also swam at the JHU Invitational on Saturday.

In the women’s 100-yard butterfly, Virginia Walsh placed sixth with a time of 58.18 seconds. The men’s 100-yard butterfly saw Cameron Shinnick claim first place in 48.53, closely followed by teammate Hans Van Lierop in second at 48.89. Makenna O’Brien finished third in the women’s 400-yard individual medley, clocking 4:44.31, while Hayden Bartz took third in the men’s 400 IM with a 4:04.63.

Loyola’s men dominated the 200-yard freestyle, with Thomas Cechini winning in 1:40.97, Tyler Knurek placing third in 1:41.55, Pierre Leroy fourth in 1:41.96, and Floyd Conlin eighth in 1:42.87.

Noelle Hoffman was runner-up in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke at 1:06.73, and Jack Hathaway won the men’s 100 breaststroke in 56.53, with Connor Libassi second in 57.43. Elias Corn finished seventh in 58.15, Dylan Covington was 12th in 1:00.67, and Peter Weinstein placed 13th in 1:06.89.

Lauren Lane led the women’s 100-yard backstroke, winning in 57.72, while Walsh and Grace Dwyer finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Shinnick added a third-place finish in the men’s 100 backstroke with a 49.91. In the men’s 200 backstroke, Van Lierop took third in 1:58.28.

Leroy and Conlin finished seventh and eighth in the men’s 100 freestyle, with times of 47.09 and 47.15, respectively. Hathaway, Covington, and Weinstein also scored in the event.

Hoffman and O’Brien continued their strong meet in the women’s 200 breaststroke, finishing second and third. JD Moyer won the men’s 200 butterfly in 1:48.35, while Pierre Leroy swam exhibition.

Kelly Bruen won the women’s 50-yard backstroke in 26.59, and Walsh claimed the women’s 200 backstroke in 2:04.52. Knurek and Conlin each won the men’s 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively, and Covington captured the men’s 50-yard butterfly in 22.98.
