Benedetta Pilato Hits World Junior Record in 50 Breast at Short Course Euros

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fourteen-year-old Italian Benedetta Pilato hit a new world junior record in the 50 breast during semifinals of the 2019 Short Course European World Championships.

Pilato, the top seed heading into the meet, went 29.48 to win the event over fellow Italiana Martina Carraro, who was 29.57. Only three women went under 30 seconds, the third being Belarus’ Alina Zmushka in  29.69.

Pilato had previously been 29.41 at the Nico Sapio Trophy last month, an Italian record, but that time was never ratified by FINA as a world junior record. She’ll have a chance to improve on that time and challenge the record in finals.

The rising star is also the Italian record holder in the women’s 50 breast in long course. She swam 29.98 at Worlds this summer to become the first Italian woman under 30 seconds in the event, and just the eight woman in history to do so.
