Abby Daniel of Bristow, Virginia has announced her verbal commitment to join the University of Akron’s women’s swimming and diving team after she graduates from high school in the spring of 2021. Daniel swims for Occoquan Swimming Inc. and attends Patriot High School.

Daniel is very versatile, with the potential to help the Zips in multiple events after she arrives on campus next fall. Earlier this spring she competed at the Virginia High School Class 6 State Championships. There, she took 3rd in the 200 IM (2:01.67) and 2nd in the 100 fly (54.92). In the fly she fell just behind former national high school record holder and World Junior Championship medalist Tori Huske. Daniel was also a multiple event finalist at last summer’s 2019 ISCA Summer Senior Championships.

Akron is coming off winning their 7th straight Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championship. Helping Akron to that title was MAC Co-Freshman Swimmer of the Year Weronika Goeka who was an A-finalist in the 100 and 200 back as well as a B-finalist in the 200 IM. Joining Goeka as a conference honoree was MAC Most Outstanding Swimmer Sarah Watson. Watson won both the 100 free and 200 IM, taking 2nd in the 100 fly.
Akron qualified two butterfliers for the 2019 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.
Daniel would have qualified for the A-final of the 100 fly, 200 breast, and 200 IM, as well as being with striking distance in her other events. With one year left to improve upon her times she will arrive on campus with the potential to score in every event in her freshman year.
