The Justin Sectionals turned into a family affair last weekend, as a father/son duo took to the pool together during the competition in Texas.
James Fike, 44, and his 18-year-old son, Landon Fike, joined forces in the 200 medley relay on night one of racing, representing Texas Ford Aquatics together alongside teammates Meng Yeo and Liam Giles.
The race saw Yeo (22.91), James Fike (24.22), Landon Fike (20.79) and Giles (20.96) combined for an overall time of 1:28.88, bringing home the meet title as the only team to break the 1:29 barrier.
Both father and son continued to turn in top performances over the following days of competition.
Landon Fike won the 50 free (20.05) and 50 fly (21.02) and placed 2nd in the 100 free (44.48) and 4th in the 100 fly (47.94), logging new best times in the 50 and 100 fly. He also posted a personal best time in the 100 free (44.43) as the leadoff on the 400 free relay and helped Texas Ford Aquatics to a victory in the 200 free relay, splitting 19.76 as the anchor leg.
Meanwhile, James Fike showed off his chops in the breaststroke events, winning the 50 breast (24.78) and placing 2nd in the 100 breast (53.34) and 3rd in the 200 breast (1:57.62).
Swimming has been a lifelong sport for the Fike family, with James beginning his competitive career at the age of five. He went on to swim for the University of Texas from 1999-2003 and has continued to compete in the Masters swimming sphere, in addition to founding the company Fike Swim.
Landon Fike is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School in Texas and started swimming competitively when he was around 8-years-old. He was recently named Athlete of the Meet at the 2026 UIL 5A State Championship and intends to swim in college next season, though he has not announced where yet.

Hey
Wonder how many father/son duos have happened like this in swimming before? I assume not very many but to my understanding this might be one of the fastest active father son duos ever?
Can’t be many.
I’d say it’s a pretty good bet for fastest ever (at the same time). There aren’t that many kids going faster than Landon, and there are even fewer parents of kids that age that are going anywhere near as fast as dad. If you adjust for swimflation, who knows… maybe there was a father/son duo in the past (Gary Halls?), but in absolute terms, these two have to up there.
Gary Halls are probably an unfortunate pair, Jr is a sprinter and Sr. is mid-distance. But both world class – they would have probably been on the podium 25 years ago in this contest.
The key is likely a fast dad and a semi-fast son vs the other way, like the breaststroke in the IM. The slowest cannot be too slow.
wild. Congrats to both of them.
