Notre Dame Closes Out Regular Season With Wins At Tim Welsh Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame swimming and diving closed out the regular season on their home pool deck this weekend, as the Irish hosted Illinois, Indiana State and Akron for the annual Tim Welsh Classic.

The women came out on top in the meet with 1114.5 points. Illinois took second (886), Akron finished third (824), and Indiana State finished with 644.5 points. The Notre Dame men were the only competitors on their side, so the meet was not scored.

WOMEN’S RECAP

Sophomores Carli Cronk and Hollie Widdows continue to be top contributors for the Irish. Cronk won the 400 IM (4:08.80) and 200 fly (1:55.28), while Widdows took first in the 100 fly (52.95) and 100 free (48.72). Widdows went a best time in the 100 fly, a mark that ranks eighth in program history.

Notre Dame swept the breaststroke events, as senior Mary Codevilla won the 100 breast (1:01.55) and freshman Gracie Lanning won the 200 breast (2:13.12). Codevilla’s 100 breast time is her new best time since arriving at Notre Dame.

In the diving well, Calie Brady won the 3-meter with a score of 307.70, while freshman Ellie Lee won the first event of her Irish career with a score of 312.25 in the 1-meter.

MEN’S RECAP

The Irish men used the weekend as a measuring stick heading into the postseason and had several notable swims, including a few new entries into the all-time top 10.

Shane Eckler’s winning 100 fly time of 46.23 now ranks ninth in school history, and Marcus Reyes-Gentry’s 20.82 lead off leg of the 200 medley relay broke his previous school record of 20.92.

Senior Tommy Janton, who holds the school records in the 100 and 200 back, posted his best 200 back of the season by a wide margin, finishing with a time of 1:40.64.

Up next, Notre Dame will begin the championship season with the Ohio State Winter Invite from Feb. 13-15 before heading to the ACC Championships in Atlanta from Feb. 15-21.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Fighting Illini finished the Tim Welsh Classic on Saturday afternoon, finishing in second place of four teams, after earning 886 points.

Freshman Amelia Semple, who joined the team this winter, rewrote the record book on the three-meter dive, earning a 306.75, tied for the seventh-best score in program history.

Between the lanes, veteran Liv Dorshorst opened the final session with a strong swim in the 1000 freestyle, placing second (10:02.45).  In the following event, Kalina Nikolaeva took bronze in the 200 back, swimming a 1:59.63.

Sara Jass excelled in the 200 breaststroke, taking silver by less than two tenths of a second (2:13.33). In the final swim event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay team of Maggie AdlerChloe DinerMartina Cibulkova, and Sophia Yousuf earned bronze, finishing in 3:22.88.

The Fighting Illini return to action on Saturday, February 7, for the final home meet of the season at the ARC Pool. Action is set to commence at 11 a.m. CT, and Illinois will celebrate its Senior Day.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Akron swimming and diving team concluded action at the Tim Welsh Classic with a third-place finish.

Notre Dame took first with 1,114.5 points, Illinois finished second with 886, while Akron took third with 824.

Elizabeth Noble led the Blue and Gold in the 1-meter dive with a NCAA Zone Qualifying score score of 278.80 and a fourth-place finish. She also led the Zips in the 3-meter dive with a NCAA Zone Qualifying score of 300.40 and a third-place finish.

Elle Couture took fourth in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:06.35, while Martyna Piesko claimed first in the 200 Back with a time of 1:55.90.

The 100 Free saw Ada Szwabinska clocked the second fastest time with a finish of 49.65.

Madelyn Bosler led the Blue and Gold in the 200 Breast with a third-place finish and a time of 2:14.76, while Addy Soehnlen took fourth in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:01.36.

Akron concluded action with a second-place finish in the 400 FR as Helena LalkovicCallie Parkes, Piesko and Szwabinska finished with a time of 3:20.42.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Grace Cummings recorded her second event win of the weekend as the Sycamores closed out the final day of the Tim Welsh Classic held at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

Cummings topped the field in the 1000-yard Freestyle and was joined in the top three by Maria Saldana Riebeling to highlight the final day of competition as the Sycamores battled against host Notre Dame, Illinois, and Akron.

The Sycamores finished fourth overall in the team standings at the meet, scoring the most points in program history at the annual Classic. Indiana State totaled 644.5 points over the two-day meet to finish behind Notre Dame (1114.5), Illinois (886), and Akron (824).

“We can take a lot of positives away from this weekend,” head coach Josh Christensen said. “I thought we raced well overall and had some real highlights on places. The divers did a great job as a group. With about a month left to conference, we’re excited to get back to work and put in the final preparations for that meet.”

Cummings continued her winning ways in the opening event of Saturday morning as the freshman topped the field in the 1000-yard Freestyle. Cummings went out in 9:46.97, just .6 seconds off the MVC record in winning the event by nearly 16 seconds over Illinois’ Liv Dorshorst (10:02.45).

It marked Cummings’ second win over the weekend and third top three finish after claiming the 500-yard Free title on Friday morning and finishing third in the 200-yard Free on Friday evening.

Maria Saldana Riebeling was third overall in 10:03.88, while Gemma Dilks (10:15.06) and Haley Halsall (10:17.38) were both inside the top 10 in the field.

Anna Asplund was eighth overall in the 200-yard Backstroke field as the freshman topped the Sycamores in action in the event. She touched the wall in 2:01.13 to lead Indiana State, while Ella Moustgaard (2:04.04), Sara Keefe (2:05.27), and Kate Reeves (2:06.23) all finished inside the top 20 in the field.

Kaleigh Kelley was the first to the wall for Indiana State in the 100-yard Freestyle as the junior finished eighth overall in 50.69. Erin Cummins was one spot back in ninth after finishing in 50.80, while Kalli Agapios went 51.41 to place 14th. Rachel Stutz (52.08) and Addison Johnson (52.19) were both inside the top 20, while Allie Barasch (52.79) and Ash Saple (53.19) rounded out the Sycamores in the field.

Ali Pearson led four Sycamores in the 200-yard Breaststroke field as the graduate student finished 10th in the field in 2:19.19. Jenna Nave was one spot back in 2:22.01, while Peyton Heagy finished 15th in 2:25.82. Kiarra Thomas finished 18th in 2:27.28.

Raine Boles led three Sycamores in the top eight in the 200-yard Fly event as the senior went 2:02.20 to place fifth overall in the field. Haley Halsall was two spots back in seventh in 2:03.30, while Sophia Diaz placed eighth in 2:03.83. Raz Harel finished 11th overall in 2:05.98, while Gemma Dilks (2:10.87) and Becca Shaffer (2:12.89) went 13th and 14th in the field.

The Sycamores opened the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with Erin CumminsAddison JohnsonKalli Agapios, and Kaleigh Kelley finishing in 3:23.31 to place fourth in the field. The second group of Maria Saldana RiebelingAli PearsonPeyton Heagy, and Raine Boles was seventh in 3:27.81, while the group of Kiarra ThomasSara KeefeAnna Asplund, and Sophia Diaz placed 12th in 3:33.57. The quartet of Allie Barasch, Rachel StutzKate Reeves, and Ash Saple was 14th in 3:34.05, with the final group of Jenna NaveGrace CummingsRaz Harel, and Becca Shaffer placing 16th in 3:38.97.

Jecza Lopez led two Indiana State divers in the 3M Springboard finals as the junior placed sixth overall in the field with a six-dive score of 284.80. Brenna Woodruff also advanced to the finals, placing 12th with a 239.70.

Lopez and Woodruff advanced from the 3M Diving prelims after putting together qualifying performances. Lopez was 12th with a six-dive score of 258.20, while Woodruff was one spot back after totaling 248.90. Bree Cleary (228.40), Sofia Dansereau (225.50), and Ella Taylor (217.50) also took on the field with top 20 finishes in the results.
