The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Penn State in a dual meet at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers dominated on both sides, with the women winning 154-61 and the men 133-85.
The meet drew 1,156 fans, the most ever at a UVA home meet:
The Cavaliers won 19 of the 20 events on the schedule—the women went 10-for-10 while the men claimed nine victories. The story of the day wasn’t close racing but rather dominant performances from both new and established faces. Most of the men’s swimmers tackled their bread-and-butter events, while several women focused on secondary races.
There were two double event winners on the women’s side: junior Claire Curzan and freshman Sophia Umstead.
Curzan walked away with wins in the 100 (47.16) and 200 free (1:43.50), with the latter representing a season best. Her best times remain 46.74 and 1:41.99 from February of last season. Her 47.01 season best in the 100 free situates her ninth in the NCAA standings, while today’s 1:43.50 in the 200 free slots her at 20th.
She was dominant in both races, taking the 100 by 2.39 seconds and the 200 by 0.97 seconds over sophomore teammate Katie Grimes, who logged a season best of her own in 1:44.47.
Behind Curzan in the 100 was Nina Jazy, who made her Cavalier debut. She finished runner-up to Curzan in the 100 free with her first-ever yards swim of 49.55. Jazy owns bests of 24.9/54.7 in the long-course sprint freestyles, so there is likely more to come once postseason action commences.
Umstead took her wins in the 200 IM (1:56.51) and 200 breast (2:09.72), winning by about a second and a half in both with best times. Coming into the day, her personal bests were 1:56.98 and 2:10.63 from earlier in the season.
Grimes was also notably in the 200 breast, posting 2:13.39, a best time by 1.48 seconds.
Other standout swims on the women’s side included graduate student Bryn Greenwaldt‘s 21.61 50 free win, her second-fastest ever behind the 21.58 she swam in November, which ranks 12th in the NCAA. Senior Aimee Canny also posted a 1:54.49 lifetime best in the 200 fly, an off-event for the middle-distance free and breaststroke multi-time NCAA finalist.
On the men’s side, freshman Maximus Williamson and sophomore David King were the double event winners.
Williamson first won the 200 IM with a time of 1:42.44 before taking the 100 free in 42.28. Neither were season bests; he’s been as quick as 1:41.88 and 41.54 in November. His best times in those events remain the 1:40.81 and 41.54 he produced in February 2024 and February 2025, respectively.
King took the 200 free (1:34.09) and 200 back (1:41.09), about two seconds shy of his season bests of 1:31.83 and 1:38.36, respectively.
Other highlight swims included freshman Thomas Heilman‘s 1:41.97 200 fly win, though he was 2.88 seconds shy of his season best of 1:39.09, which ranks third in the NCAA. His personal best remains 1:38.95 from December 2024.
Penn State’s lone winner on the day was senior Mariano Lazzerini, who clocked 1:52.52 in the 200 breaststroke. He’s been 1:50.93 so far this season, a lifetime best that ranks him sixth nationwide.

Guess we all moved on from the Gary Taylor news and are all good again in C’ville
Yeah I mean…people move on. Sorry you haven’t.
He’s not working with kids anymore. These athletes have the right to transfer if they don’t like it. What are you looking for?
Well I haven’t seen any top recruits commit to UVA in 2027 soooo……..
Katie Grimes was raving about him as a person and coach on the Unfiltered Waters podcast. Guess you didn’t see that.
I mean, godforbid a coach (who admittedly wasn’t a very nice guy) gets checked, works on it, and improves his relationship with his athletes.
Hate it when people show growth.
I’m pretty sure we saw the same thing with Teri McKeever and Lars Jorgonson but alr
Comparing Gary Taylor to Lars Jorgensen is unhinged.
Please explain to me how *allegedly* yelling at swimmers and being tough on them is the same as *confirmed/litigated/prosecuted* sexual harassment and assault charges. I can maybe see your Teri McKeever comparison, but she was mentally and emotionally abusing college swimmers on her current and recent teams. But the current swimmers on the UVA team are actually raving about Gary Taylor so that’s not exactly a 1:1 comparison either.
Just admit you love to hate UVA for probably no valid reason and therefore want to stir things up that really aren’t there. That would save us a lot more time if you just admit that.
Coach Hollie really building a strong legacy at PSU! B1G things ahead for those teams!!
Lol
Are you fr
Does Aimee Canny ever swim IM? It seems like she could be really good at it.
She has and is yes, she is pretty good at it
How does the dual meet scheduling work? With no disrespect meant to Penn State this seems like a bit of a mismatch (ie not a test for UVA). Are there certain D1 teams that have to meet for a dual?
I don’t know what happened here, but Penn State was not on the original schedule in August and was added in mid-September, probably to serve as a Senior Day meet. When SwimSwam did the article on UVA’s schedule in August, Braden made a comment that he thought there was another Spring dual meet scheduled, but the school backed out. https://swimswam.com/virginia-releases-2025-2026-schedule-with-two-home-meets/#comment-1628423
I guess a related question – where possible are senior day dual meets scheduled in the hope that the home team will win (to give the seniors a good send off)? It seems that way more often than not but I get that it won’t always work out like that!
Actually starting to feel a bit better about this UVA men’s team. Interested to see how they do later at ACCs
Maximus doing breast reminds me of when Texas needed a 50 breaststroker before Licon learned how to sprint and gad to go John Murray for a couple years and then Schooling his senior year 😂
And now we have 3 guys who will all make big finals at NCAAs. A rags to riches story (no offense to Murray and Schooling, they were great swimmers just not breaststrokers).
I think you’re missing 2 guys? I assume you’re looking at the breaststroke specialists, but I’d be surprised if Modglin and Nelson don’t do damage in the 100 and 200 respectively.
Is Chris smith still joining the smith
No, he decided to stay home in South Africa.
Any info on why? That’s a huge blow to the men’s team’s point potential not having a breaststroke ace for their medleys.
Based on the times posted, the women’s team looked as though they were still hungover from New Year’s Eve. If the women’s team performs like that in two weeks, they will get their asses kicked by North Carolina State.
New year, same terrible takes
I doubt we’ll see lineups that look like these.
You continue to irrationally worry about UVA women. They will beat NC State. They will easily win NCAAs, even if Grimes scores 0 points.
