Most of this morning’s top qualifiers will continue through to the evening session, with only a few scratches impacting the lineup on night two of the 2025 European Short Course Championships.

Germany’s Isabel Gose dropped out of the semifinal of the women’s 200 free shortly after the prelims session. Gose finished 15th this morning in 1:56.28, a season-best time by almost a full second, and would have been the second German athlete to qualify for the semifinals in the event behind 6th-place Nina Holt.

Gose no longer appears on the start list for tonight’s session; taking her place in the semifinal heats is Portugal’s Francisa Soares Martins, who finished 20th this morning in 1:56.80. Soares Martins’ performance this morning shaved .01 off of her previous personal best from 2023.

Gose has already delivered an impressive performance in Lublin so far, as she won the 400 free on night one in a Championship Record time of 3:54.33. Her performance also broke the European Record and her own German Record, with Gose knocking around 2.5 seconds off her previous best time.

No official reason has been given for her scratching the 200 free this evening, but she is the top seed in the women’s 800 free, the heats of which will kick off tomorrow.

Aside from Gose, all other scratches for this evening were a result of the ‘2 Per Nation’ rule, which allows only two swimmers from each country to advance out of the preliminary heats.

The men’s 200 free saw a number of athletes affected by this rule. Great Britain’s Matt Richards, a dominant force in the 200 free, will not appear in the semifinals of the event after taking 3rd this morning in 1:41.79 behind teammates Jack McMillan (1:41.41) and Duncan Scott (1:41.58). Similarly, Lithuania’s Tajus Juska and Kristupas Trepocka placed 15th and 17th but were 3rd and 4th among their countrymen and will not be able to race tonight.

Austria’s Bernhard Reitshammer will watch from the sidelines tonight, as he placed 6th in the prelims of the men’s 100 IM this morning (52.55) but was the 3rd-fastest Austrian swimmer in the event.

Kinda weird that she isn’t replaced by the next best German, Werner at #18? That’s what I would’ve expected. Now her day’s work has been preventing a teammate from making it and then scratching lol

Maya Werner will start in the 800 tomorrow, too.
