Wisconsin sophomore Maggie Wanezek details her freshman season and confidence as she competes in Austin, Texas this week for her midseason meet. Wanezek has already posted numerous lifetime best times this fall with a 23.50 50 backstroke lead off and a 50.3o in the 100 backstroke. Coming into midseason, her 100 backstroke time sits at #3 in the NCAA this season, only behind Bella Sims of Michigan (49.87) and Claire Curzan of Virginia (50.08).

Wanezek arrived at Wisconsin last fall and finaled in the 200 backstroke at the 2025 NCAA Championships. She finished 13th in a 1:51.33, less than a second off her lifetime best 1:50.62 that she swam at midseason a year ago. She still has the opportunity to train alongside US Olympian and NCAA backstroke champion Phoebe Bacon, who remained in Madison despite head coach Yuri Suguiyama departing the Badgers in April to join USA Swimming. The two now train under head coach Dr. Jack Brown who was hired in May.
