Over the course of the World Cup, Carson Foster was top 3 in the 400 IM, 400 Free, and 1500 Free at all 3 stops. Foster has been putting more of an emphasis on longer freestyle training this season so far and has enjoyed training and racing the longer events. With this summer’s main meet being Pan Pacific Championships, where qualified athletes can swim any event they want, Foster said this might be the perfect season to test the distance free waters.

Carson Foster is the Justin Herbert of swimming
I think to play up his relative strengths and be more competitive against his training partners in that 400 IM, Carson needs to be a 3:42 guy and probably capable of a 1:54 200 back even if we never see the backstroke in competition. I hope this means a step in that direction.
Best 400 time is a 3:45 for sure could do something with that
Absolutely.
Phelps also did 400 free in 2005, a year after the Olympics.
So Bob looks like repeating the same game play.
Not a good example, though. He swam it horribly.
Ehh didn’t he drop a 3:47 at some point. He just flopped at worlds but the potential was always there he just needed to figure the race out.
I don’t think so. He said after the race in Montreal that he didn’t know how to pace it and I can’t recall him ever swimming it again after that. I believe he was 3:50 or worse.
Michael Phelps broke the American record in the 400 LCM free at 2003 Nationals in College Park, MD, with a 3:46.73. After that, he never swam a tapered 400 free well (he was double-tapered at College Park after World Championships, but he was so young and skinny back then so it probably didn’t matter), but I remember him going 3:48.0 at Santa Clara pro swim in 2009.
