Iona Sweeps Wagner, Women Add Win Over Sacred Heart In Tri-Meet

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In front of a capacity crowd at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool, the Iona University men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs delivered a thrilling performance, posting a trio of come-from-behind victories.
 
The Iona women overcame an early 32-0 springboard diving deficit to rally and take the lead after the final individual event, defeating Sacred Heart University 126-111 and Wagner College 120-85. A key factor in the comeback was the performance of Mary Grace WaringPaige FiorinoCaitlin Hopkins, and Kate Kennedy, who combined to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best time of 3:35.64. The pair of wins moves the women’s season record to a perfect 6-0.
 
The Iona men trailed throughout their meet until the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Kieran EganElijah DecasseresNate Wales, and Harry Platt posted a MAAC-best time of 3:04.72 to secure the victory, bringing the men’s record to 2-2.
 
Individually, the women scored first-place finishes in several events, with Marissa Hengesbach winning the 1000 free in 10:48.85, Victoria Mordaunt taking the 50 free in 24.52, and Brennyn Veit claiming the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.16. On the men’s side, standout performances included Kieran Egan in the 50 free (20.93) and 200 back (1:51.17), Harry Platt in the 200 free (1:43.24) and 100 free (46.92), Dylan Riccio on the 1-meter (236.96) and 3-meter (258.95) springboard events, and Max Buchen in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.87).
 
“The story of today’s meet was our group’s competitiveness in every race and heat,” said Head Coach Nick Cavataro. “The double-dual format on the women’s side, along with multiple heats in every event, made every race and placing valuable. We had 16 women score in the top five across events, and 18 different men contributed points. That depth and teamwork is what positioned us to win.”

Both teams jump right back into Hynes next Friday and Saturday as the host Holy Cross and Providence College respectively on Friday and Saturday.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Swimming & Diving teams set new meet records at the Hynes Center Pool over the weekend against Iona and Sacred Heart.

Seniors Sophia Varon-Fowler and Lia Vendel, along with sophomores Lovisa Ramsten and Gaya Savran swam a 3:57.56 in the women’s 400-yard medley relay, which beat the previous meet record by less than half a second (3:57.78 in 2022). Savran also set a new meet record in the women’s 200-yard butterfly, beating her own 2:07.47 time from last year with a 2:07.09 time this year.

Sophomore Mia Goodale set a few records of her own, starting with the 200-yard freestyle event. Her time of 1:53.63 not only beat the previous meet record of 1:54.87, but it also beat her own winning time from last season’s meet (1:55.69). Later on, she set the 500-yard freestyle record at the meet with a 5:05.46 time, keeping all of her laps under 31.5 seconds each.

On the men’s side, juniors Senan NoonanManuel Chavez Villalpando, and sophomores Max Wameling and Florian Schumich smashed the previous 400-yard medley relay record by almost five seconds, finishing with a 3:23.69 time. Wagner had held the previous record with a 3:28.61 time set in 2023.

Schumich went on to set the individual medley record with a time of 1:54.90, beating the previous record by over half a second. Junior Nikko Carrillo, who set the old record in 2023, finished second in this year’s race.

The Seahawks will continue their season with a trip to New Haven, and a meet against Southern Connecticut State on Halloween night. The women’s team will additionally compete against CCSU in the same meet.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up competition in the final day of its tri-meet against Iona University and Wagner College on Saturday.

After day one, the Pioneers held a commanding 32-0 lead over both schools. SHU carried that momentum into the final events, defeating Wagner 151-86 and narrowly falling to Iona 126-111.

The meet featured several standout individual and relay performances. Ryleigh Mahoney swept the diving events, earning first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter on Friday night. Maddie Goret won the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:11.33, and later placed second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.67, moving her to fourth all-time in program history. Teammate Maggie Holland followed closely in the same event, finishing fourth with a time of 2:26.12, now fifth all-time at SHU.

Charlotte Kaduson earned second place in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a season-best 10:52.53. Sophia Velleco had a strong showing with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:55.53) and a season-best 53.43 in the 100 freestyle. Abby Hernandez took third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.24, and Kaitlyn Schwarts placed second in the 200 backstroke with a season-best 2:11.19.

The Pioneers also saw success in the relays. The 400 medley relay team of Maddie GoretMaggie HollandSophia Velleco, and Emma Davis finished third with a time of 3:59.00. In the 400 freestyle relay, Emma DavisLaura DeGennaro, Brook Labarge, and Emma Haas combined for a third-place finish in 3:41.14.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 12 p.m. when the Pioneers travel to face MAAC opponents Stonehill and Merrimack.
